Default Pro Tools MP Setup and General Troubleshooting

I am trying to set up PT 7.1 M-Powered on a new MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz, 17", 160GB 7200. The OS is 10.4.9 - pre-installed. I have read the Digidesign compatibility issues with this OS, but the fixes offered do not work with this Mac. Firstly, the combo upgrade will not run. Apple have confirmed that it won't run when the OS is already 10.4.9. Secondly, the prebinding script will run, but has no effect. Opening PT crashes the Mac every time. I would be most grateful for your help!
