Default Wow, HD|3 to HDX, let me see if I've got this right...

I'm still running PTHD|3 8.0.1cs2 w/192io on an Apple G5/10.5.8. I'm starting to hit DAE Errors 9030/9131/9060 from time to time.

I just checked in with the Avid/Pro Tools world for the first time in a while and it looks like if I want long-term stability/performance, my best bet is a $7000 upgrade from HD|3 + 192io to HDX + HDio?!

Holy crap.

I'm seriously considering HD|Native at this point. Pros/Cons? Anyone in the same boat? What are my options (besides building a stop-gap PC with PCIx slots)?

Based on what info? You didn't even ask him what his needs are!! HD Native is capable of quite a lot. It has the added benefit of being able to use your current interfaces and cabling which is huge IMO.

To the OP. See if you can get a demo of an HD Native rig. Take a session there that you know maxes out your system etc.

One thing is for sure, and that is that HD Native needs a current gen Mac to run its best.

Open to discussion, but here's what I would budget for each of these options.

Option #1 HDX
$7000 - Exchange to HDX
$3000 - new computer
$2000 - update TDM plugins to AAX DSP
$1000 - upgrade to HD11 or $1200 for two years of service contract
--------
$13,0000

Option #2 HD/N
$1600 - Legacy Exchange Core PCI -> HDN Card
$3000 - Legacy Exchange 192 -> HD I/O
$3000 - new computer
$1000 - update AAX plugins (assuming it's going to be less than AAX DSP)
$1000 - upgrade to HD11 or $1200 for two years of service contract
-------
$9600 (can still sell off your other two TDM cards for some cash)

Option # 3 Standard Protools
$700 - Protools 10
$3000 - new computer
$2000 - new interface
$1000 - update AAX plugins (assuming it's going to be less an AAX DSP)
$300 - upgrade to PT11
--------------
$7000 (can sell off all your cards and 192 for cash)

Option #4 Do nothing

Busch.

Option 4 - New computer, Magma, i/o crossgrade.
Then wait till these new systems really prove themselfs, and the prices come down.
Im gonna have to really hear a sonic difference to spend that kind of money.

Selling your PCI cards, and buying used PCIe Accel cards and a new MacPro would be your best option IMO.

No matter which route you choose, its going to call for a new computer. Time to retire the old G5

Cheaper option:

Keep cards & build Hackintosh using PCI motherboard.

The minimal investment will allow you to experience significant increases in CPU power and enable you to sit things out for a bit longer before you decide on any big-budget switch.

Worked for me with Accel3 system. PT8 HD still going strong.

Assuming this is an ongoing business that is successful for you (or you have $$ and don't mind)

The $7K exchange is pretty good especially if they take your PCIx cards (don't say whether this is PCIe only or all HD3)....... Essentially they are giving you $4K off list for this ... not too bad......

The interim PC running W7 and PCI slots is the low cost couple year solution. Buy a computer, update protools.... away you go....... I would go this way and wait for HDX to be around for a little while before jumping.......

HD\N trade ins are silly..... you can Buy HD\N + 8x8x8 with PT10 right now for $5.5K (call around and you will do even better)...... and then sell your stuff for whatever. Or trade it in and pay ~4.5K....... they are valuing your stuff in this trade at around $500..... Heck.... bring it over here and I will give you the $500

Best of luck.......
