4-pin XLR connectors???? what for?
I was in an electronics supply store the other day getting some parts for my own ideas that I build, and the guy asked me if I wanted the new 4-pin XLR connectors.
I said FOUR pin connectors?? He said "all the new equipment is coming out with it now" I asked, like what? what is the 4th pin for, extra shielding? some new implementation for more noise cancellation? He couldn't answer at all. And I have never seen these connectors on any gear ever before....even new gear I would like to consider myself familiar with. Am I just in the dark here and everybody already knows about these 4-pin XLRs? Someone please teach a man to fish here.

Re: 4-pin XLR connectors???? what for?
4 and 5 pin are very common for power (4 pin: field recording power A & V, GML uses 5 pin for there power interconnect)
6 and 7 are common on power and signal cables (I believe Sound Deluxe uses 7 pin for there tube mics)

4 pin typically 12VDC on XLR.

yeah, thats pretty good. the "new connectors." they aren't new. we're putting them to use as a small 1 channel more me headphone system.
I think I'd stay away from that store if thats the information they're giving out.

ha, yea....it wasn't a pro audio "equipment" store.....just one of these bulk electronic component stores
actually a friggin great place in terms of prices for unsoldered jacks, switches, cables, etc

Re: 4-pin XLR connectors???? what for?
My Neutrik catalog shows seven pins as the max on a standard XLR. As stated, four pin is used for power on cameras and VTRs, usually pin 1 minus and pin 4 plus for DC. The audio output of many HD camcorders is a five-pin XLR for stereo audio.
The guy didn't know what he was talking about. No equipment is using 4-pin for "regular" audio. It would make more sense to use 5-pin for stereo.
