Default Another odd video problem

I have a score project underway for a documentary. For no reason I can fathom, after having created some tracks for the score, the video won't play. I get a message saying "the video reported an error". This after playing problem free about 20 times. Whatever the error is, it seems to affect the MIDI too, as I can't get any midi input at all. MIDI and videos works fine on other sessions which are part of the same project.

Any thoughts? I'm under deadline here? What should I look for, check or do? I'm at a loss.

Is it an h264 video? There may be very few key frames and you may be starting from a point where it cannot calculate what the video should be doing as it hasn't passed a key frame. Just a thought..

Yes, I believe it is H264. But I was starting (or attempting to start) right at 00:00, so I doubt that's the issue. Also, I was able to start from any point on the timeline prior with no issues.

One thing I thought of this morning is just re-importing the video and see if that will work. As long as I line up the timecode correctly, I should be fine with the music tracks syncing. Maybe something is corrupted in the video import itself.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Try playing the video from a different drive or your system drive.
I've come across some flavours of MP4 or AAC originating from Windows computers that will only play on my boot drive SSD.

I've no idea why. Maybe a permissions thing or they just require super-fast speed.

The weirdest thing is, even if I transcode them to Pro Res etc they still will not play from certain drives.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought of transcoding to Pro Res, but what I did first was create a new session, imported my score tracks, then imported the video again. And now it all works as its supposed to...at least until it doesn't! PT just doesn't like H264 files, which this happens to be. I couldn't get the producer/editor to send it to me Pro Res because he said it would take far too long to render.

Have you tried transcoding the video to something Pro Tools likes, like DNxHD? The first part of this might help:

Certain flavours of H264 are just bad news for Pro Tools.
The other day I imported a bunch of videos into a perfectly fine session and it got corrupted. I can only open it in PT10. (I didn't try importing into another session)

Yeah, if I have problems with the other segments if this project, I'll try transcoding. But I did finish up the problem child tonight! I just hope the producer likes what I did. He loved the first one!

Well, problems arise again. What's the best program for transcoding? I need to transcode H264 to DNxHD. (Or I guess I could use ProRes, too). I've used Adobe Media Encoder in the past. Is there any other?
