Looking for a certain kind of plugin, but don't know what it's called
Howdy, maybe you folks can help me out. Way wayyyyyy back in the late 90s, when I was still using Deck II, I had this plug in that would take a section of audio and make it conform to a certain note. For example, I could take a segment of vocal audio, and click on a certain key on this virtual keyboard, and it would make all the vocals sound like they were sung on that one note. It would also make the voice sound sort of robotic. What is that called? I think it might be called a vocoder, but I'm not sure. I also think there's a hardware version of that, where you have a mic plugged into a keyboard, and it makes your vocals conform to whatever key you're pressing.
Anyway, I'm sure there must be something like that available in aax form, that I can use in PT 11. Can someone recommend something like that? Or not even that specifically, but just in general -- I'm interested in finding plug ins that can bring out certain overtones, so that I can take non-musical sounds and make them sound musical. Thanks! |

Re: Looking for a certain kind of plugin, but don't know what it's called
Hey
We use hardware gear for that BUT this plugin software Vocoder does a GREAT JOB if that is what you want. From what you describe a Vocoder is what you want so this one is awesome and works in PT11 and lower. http://www.xils-lab.com/pages/XILS-V%252b.html Free trial aswell so you know what you buy Here is another one but without a virtual keyboard which makes it somewhat restricted but sounds nice. http://www.meldaproduction.com/plugi...hp?id=MVocoder There are other plugins that does the job but if you want a quality working Software version of great outboard gear I would definitly go with the XILS one (the first link in this post) but as they both are free trials you can demo each one and see what you think aswell as how the prices compare to what you get. If you want to go deep into the world of toneshaping and what not you should check out Melodyne which is a seriously awesome product. Although pricey its worth every cent as you can make you own choirs and from one lead take you can make it sound like a whole choir with under and over dubs etc. Not much "robotic" sounds but its a beast! We couldn't live without it. Link here: http://www.celemony.com/en/start Then there is the obvious classic which no studio can go without and has been tried and tested since the 90's : Autotune also free trial which is a great tool for any tone shaping and tuning of wav takes on any signal: http://www.antarestech.com Best of Luck!

Re: Looking for a certain kind of plugin, but don't know what it's called
My first DAW, back in 2001 or so, was Deck 3.5.
I think you're remembering "Phase Vocoder". Any modern vocoder will beat the pants off that thing. I was about to recommend the two that Christopher did, along with Vocalizer Pro The thing about the Meldaproduction one is that it doesn't have an internal synth. Instead, it lets you sidechain in any signal you want as the carrier. Very cool, it allows you to do a lot of things that a traditional vocoder doesn't do - like talkbox effects with a vocal as the modulator, and a real guitar track as the carrier.

Thanks for the suggestions guys; I can't wait to try out the demos! Oh and mesaone, I think you're right, "Phase Vocoder" sounds very familiar.
Sometimes I get nostalgic for Deck... I wish there were a way to run it on a modern Mac, so I could listen to all my old, unfinished projects. |

Re: Looking for a certain kind of plugin, but don't know what it's called
Deck rocked. My first home studio multi-track system was Deck internally synced to Logic (or was it Studio Vision), then slaved to my Tascam 8-track. Had about 20 screaming tracks.
I know Digi incorporated a lot of the Deck software in the first versions of Protools. I had a manual for PT3 that had the same layout and fonts as the manual for Deck.
