Default 003 Rack+ Front DI Jack

Hi all, I was told that the 8 line inputs on the back of my 003 rack+ did not bypass the pres. Is this true?

Also, does the DI jack on the front use one of the pres or does it bypass for true line in?

Which channel does the front jack use?

Thanks in advance for your input.

The front DI goes through the preamp because all DI's must first go through a preamp to get to line level. The DI's correspond to the channels they are closest to. There is no DI jack on the front. Just the controls for the ones in the back.

Thanks for trying to help, but there is definitely a DI jack on the front. This is an 003 Rack+, you might want to look at some pics.

Anyone have experience with this?

Nice come back
What does it say right above the input on the front?
That should tell you exactly what input it corresponds to, CH1.

Also a DI input is not the same as a line input so how would it be a straight line in?
It's just the pre amp with a different gain stage being used.

So the answer to your questions are the front input is tied to channel 1's pre amp.

Why in the world would Digi not have incorporated at least one channel to bypass the pres? Not good.

I mean on the 003 unit itself. I have a Saffire Pro 40 via light pipe, but what if I didn't? One through jack would have been nice.

Didn't realize you had the + version. So yeah, DI on the front for channel 1 is the same as on the back for channel 1. They've just added an alternate one on the front for convenience so you don't have to always plug things in the back.

Probably of little use to 9
0% of 003+ users, even worse now that they are no longer hardware dependent.
Remember people wanted more pres on the 003 and when Avid did it people still didn't appear overly responsive to it.

At least you now have the option of using whatever interface is the best fit for your needs.

The whole point of the 003r+ was to satisfy the users that cried about wanting 8 mic preamps. For those(like you) that do NOT, the 003r(none + version) would be a better choice(and you could probably work an even trade with someone). That version has 4 line inputs that can handle +4, which are perfect for connecting analog mic preamps. As said, SPDIF and ADAT are available and also work as intended. There are at least a dozen ADAT-equipped 8 channel preamps from about $200(Behringer ADA8000) on up to $3K(Focusrite ISA-828). My personal fave is the Focusrite OctoPre Mk II Dynamic. Some options for the SPDIF input are the ART Digital MPA, DBX-386 or API A2D. The ART gets really good reviews and is a bargain for those on a budget.

Having said this, my setup uses the Focusrite ISA-428 on lightpipe(which also handles 4 analog preamps in an API lunchbox) and 8 channels of the OctoPre Mk II Dynamic fed into the 8 quarter inch inputs(but I do NOT have the 003r+ version).
