that actually wont do a whole lot. there just isnt enough mass. you would be better off looking into some owens corning 703, or john manville 814. MUCH more effective at absorption.

Both these setups seem like they could work, as far as reducing the amount of sound that is reflected to the room and then coming back into the mic. So as a portable "DRY" enviorment I'd say yes. (the metal mesh on the first pic seems like its meant to diffuse...)
They will likely be worthless in stoping external noise sources from being recorded since (as mentioned) they have little mass. This is not an alternative to an ISO booth.

Well I definitely can't afford an ISO booth haha I'm looking for a cheaper way that works with vocals.

Not sayin you should build one.
Is your problem noise from the outside coming in? or room reflections?
For the latter these type of solutions work.
However if your problem is, say, traffic noise coming in, this might dampen it a bit but will not block it. Blocking sound requires mass and/or dead air space (trapped between 2 sealed walls or windows).

Still, in the mix the signal of the vocal is typically so much loader than any noise recorded with it so Ghetto recordings work :)

ahhh ... the old U-Haul packing blanket trick. It WILL indeed work for making a "dead" area so your vocals will be drier sounding. Won't stop much of any other room noise coming through though. I used to do this before I could afford to build an iso booth, and it worked well for taming the reflective sounds .

Experimenting with microphone placement and pattern can do a lot for you, depending on your room sometimes aiming the center of a cardioid pattern toward a corner of a room will help turn poor reflections into better ones. Or aim the rejected portion of the pattern toward any unwanted sound source. Play around, this stuff can make a difference.

Have you tried facing your vocalist into an open closet full of coats?

The audiomute blankets are great. You'll be surprised how well they keep reflections down.
