id like to buy the digi 001 to use along with 2 adats and my mackie digital 8 bus board. Id like to use protools for an additional 8 channels. I was wondering if later on when i save some more money can i use the digi 001 with the professional pro tools 5.1

I wouldn't go for digi 001.
Get a Motu 2408, so that you'll have 8 analog i/o. Motu ships the unit with the audiodesk software, which is basically the audio side of Digital Performer. On my g3 beige 300mhz w/320 mo ram, 7200rmp ata66 drive for audio, I manage to get 40-50 tracks at 24 bit/48 khz, with 4-5 big motu reverbs, and many eq & comp plug-ins.

Furthermore, you'll be able to edit the data of your adat machines because the 2408 has 24 adats i/o…

If you want to use pro-tools with the 2408, get pro-tools free (8 tracks). That's what I do.

im still leaning toward the digi 001 because it has optical digital in and out which keeps everything digital. Those analog cables are expensive. the light pipe ( optical) cable is only 25 bucks and has better sound

OK! The digi 001 has one optical light pipe i/o…

The Motu 2408 has got 3 of them!! I was talking about optical i/o, not analog (the unit has only 8 of them)!!
You can get 3X8=24 optical inputs!!!!
These were the 24 adat i/o I was talking about…

Trust me, I've got the unit, and interface it with light pipe devices all day long…

Check out Motu's web site…
Go 2408, you can't go wrong.

I was not aware you could use Pro Tools with a MOTU interface. Could you elaborate on this a bit? I always thought it had to be AMIII, 001 or TDM.

You can only use PT software with your Digi hardware. You "can" use other manf software (like Logic, Digital Performer..etc) IF they make a Direct Connect driver to do so.

You can't use the full PT 5.x with "le" products..and..they are also not expandable. What you see is what you get.

LE only.

In fact, you can only use Pro Tools free with Motu hardware (or any other non-digi stuff). The software is quite limited, but it's nice for exchanging takes with a pro-tools owner.

However, I posted a thread a few days ago on the Audiomedia 3 forum. I wanted to know if I could use the Digi Audiomedia 3 to run Pro Tools LE, and still use the 2408 i/o as well as sync possibilities. I was told that it could be possible. I didn't try, and don't know how many tracks you can record at once.

This idea can appear a bit weird, and many of you reading this thread may wonder why I don't buy a digi 001. Well, I'm affraid that Digi 001 is too limited a unit. Pro Tools is not what I need. Most of all, you guys seem to have a lot of problems with your gear. AND I DO NOT WANT THAT!!!!
MOTU does sweet gear. It has worked flawlessly since the begining, and the instalation was a breeze.
