Default Fast Track Pro 6.1.10 drivers won't install on Windows 8.1 64bit

For several generations of Windows (XP Pro -> 7 -> 8 -> 8.1) I have had trouble with my Fast Track Pro freezing occasionally and requiring system reboot. So I have tried to keep the drivers up to date in the hope this will eventually be fixed.

But the latest 6.1.10 drivers won't install. I tried uninstalling the previous drivers, but that didn't help, and now NEITHER the 6.1.10 drivers NOR the previous 6.0.7 drivers will install. The error message is just:

"M-Audio Fast Track Pro 6.1.0 (x64) Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error. [No kidding!] Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, [blah, blah blah try again useless [bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep] with no technical details..]"

My system is a new dual 3.84 GHz Acer with 16GB memory, 64-bit Windows 8.1.

So my Fast Track Pro is now completely unusable, and I can't do anything about it!

Please help!!!!

David

Do you have any AV software that might be preventing the install? Try running CCleaner to clean up any remnants of old software and drivers. When installing the drivers, right click and install as Administrator.

Hi Joel,

Thanks for your message!

I uninstalled LightWorks (even though my audio had worked fine after its recent installation). Also ran CCleaner, then rebooted.

Alas, running the Fast Track Pro 6.1.10 installer as Administrator still fails with the same error.

What Joel meant is do you have any Anti-Virus (AV) program that are enabled when installing the drivers? These can sometimes block an installation, or have an effect on the installation of any software that they won't work properly because the AV thought some part of the installation process was suspect when it was not.

Hi Manny,

Yes, I did think Joel meant "Audio/Video" by AV software. So I tried disabling my Norton Antivirus and running the installer again (as Administrator).

Still exactly the same problem

At this point, I am strongly suspecting that the root cause of the problem here is the latest 8.1 updates from Microsoft. Has ANYBODY had success installing the 6.1.10 drivers on a 64-bit system with all the latest Win 8.1 updates??

The FastTack Pro appears in the Device Manager's list, but has the "Microsoft Audio Driver" (and FTP does NOT appear in the Control Panel's "Manage Audio Devices" list).

I wish I had the driver files as a standard .inf and dlls etc, then I could just use "update driver" to install 6.1.10. But since I only have the "Wizard" executable, which fails every time, I can't try that.

Is there any way I can get an archive of the driver files with the .inf, so I can see if installing that way works??

I dug around in the Control Panel's System and Security Action Center, and finally found some more detail about the failed install. It says this:

Source
Driver software installation

Summary
Could not install driver software

Date
‎6/‎12/‎2014 11:37 PM

Status
Not reported

Description
Windows could not copy all of the files needed to install this device driver software. This sometimes happens when the driver software was not designed for this version of Windows.

Hopefully someone will post with success/fail info for you. The driver is supposed to work with 8.1, but I'm not sure about 8.1, update 1 (man MS need to change there versioning!). Had it been working properly before the latest updates, or was this a first install on a new computer?

6.0.7 had been working on 8.1, but with the usual intermittent freezing requiring a reboot. Everything went south when I tried to install 6.1.10. That failed, so I tried uninstalling 6.0.7, then 6.1.10 install still failed, then 6.0.7 re-install failed, so now I'm left with nothing...
