Default upgradeing old system

I'm wanting to get back into recording after several years on break.

I have PT 6.1
Digi Rack 002

The PC I had it setup on is not functioning properly anymore and does not seem to accept any input device (such as mouse or keyboard) from the ps2 slot or any of the USB slots.
The specs on this PC were barley able to run 6.1 and the rack.

My question are these:

1) Can I upgrade from 6.1 to 8.xx for $150 (upgrade price for 8.0 listed on digi website)
2) any issues with 8.xx on rack002?
3) This last one really isn't a question, but something I am musing over -Seeing as I have struggled past the growing pains on win7, I am now fully set on not using xp ever again. I see that vista is listed as qualified, but I also have no real interest in vista, at least long term. So should I get a vista qualified system and load win7 on it?

Default Re: upgradeing old system

1-PT8 is a full installer and does not require any previous version(it includes a utility to uninstall any older version)

2-PT8 should run dandy with the 002(8.0.1cs1 is the best version for now)

3-you need a new computer and probably most off-the-shelf systems will be a poor choice. I would build(read the first few pages of the i7 thread) and I would install XP for now(and wait for a real...aka NON-BETA version of Pro Tools before moving to Win7. If you can't build, then look at an i7 920 system with the X58 chipset as those systems offer the best chance for success(but I would pull the system drive, since it will have Windows 7, and install a fresh drive with XP). You also NEED a separate hard drive for recording(in case your old system did not have one).
