Default Keyboard shortcut for recording

This is an amateur question, but here goes. I have been used to working in Windows, and recently got my first mac. When using PT in Windows, I just used F12 for recording. This obviously isn't the same for the Mac, or there is something I'm not getting. I have went through all the shortcut settings as described in the manual, but still F12 only adjusts the speaker volume.

What's the trick? Is there maybe another key on the Mac, or is there no "one key" solution?

Hold down the "fn" key and change your keyboard settings in your system preferences. Also, disable spotlight in your system preferences for the shift+spacebar option.

If I read this right, there is no "one key" solution, like on the Windows version?

I believe I have disabled that Spotlight thing, at least what the manual said.

If you disable the F12 spotlight key command in system prefs then F12 will trigger recording in Pro Tools.

I believe I've already done that, hence my puzzlement. I'll triple check.

In system preferences, under keyboard, there is a box to check "to use F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys." If you check that then pressing f12 will work for recording. When not using Pro Tools, you will have to use fn + F12 for volume when listening to audio on your computer.

If you have one of the keyboards with a numeric pad you can just push the number 3. If you're on a laptop you'd have to do numlock then push the 3 rhat I believe is on "L" or "."

This sounds like what I'm after. I'll check it out as soon as possible. Thanks!
