Default 12.8.1 Crash on Quit

Hi everyone,

Facing a consistent crash with 12.8.1 which I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing. Steps to reproduce are:
  1. Quit the app

That's it!

Every time I quit 12.8.1, whether I have a session open or not, whether I do it from the taskbar or from the Pro Tools menu, I get the generic 'Send to Avid' crash box.

It seems to start up fine each time after, but it's still kind of annoying. I didnt try 12.8.0, but didn't have this issue with 12.7.1.

My setup is in my sig, with more details in my profile. The exact macOS version I'm using is 10.12.6. I do have Cloud Collab installed, but I'm not currently signed into my avid profile in PT, in case that's relevant.

FYI, I already did a complete wipe of app, preferences, wave cache and plugins folder before this install.

hi, i just installed 12.8.1 .. i decided to do the worst case and did not toss prefs, installed from AAM, did not uninstall Cloud Features .. using an older session .. and i cannot get the Send to Avid error ..

what am i missing to make this happen .. ??? now, this is my laptop and i do NOT have any 3rd party plugins .. so could this be a PLugin Issue ?? something not up to date ??

happy to test !!! so far so good here ..

cheers john

I've been experiencing this during the last 3 or 4 versions, 12.8 was better but even though 12.8.1 hasn't crashed yet it takes a lot more time to close.

That usually traces to a plug-in.

Judging from the number of views this has already, but few responses, it seems like maybe this isn't impacting most people. I would think even Avid wouldn't have released this version if it crashed for everyone on Quit.

Not sure what the differentiating factor is for me. It could be plugins, though I don't have anything too unusual installed. My 3rd party plugins (outside of my 'Unused' folder) are as follows:
  • NI Komplete 11 (Absynth, Driver, FM8, Guitar Rig, Kontakt, Massive, Reaktor, Replika, Supercharger, Transient Master)
  • iZotope (Neutrino, Ozone, Vinyl)
  • Mastering the Mix (LEVELS, REFERENCE)
  • Waves 9.91 (C6, Doubler, H-EQ, L3-LL, Vitamin, WavesTune)
  • Waves 9.7 (Whatever's left on this - ReWire and StudioRack, I think?)

Thing is, this started happening even before I'd really put most of these back. I put pretty much all of them back in 1-by-1 to test stability, and from what I remember, this crash was happening before they even went back in. All are up-to-date too, as checking them all was something else I did during the update to 12.8.1.

I see you're on 10.12.5, so not sure if that's related. Obviously your machine has much more power than mine, but mine never struggled with quitting PT before.

One other observation: It seems to quit without issue if I had never opened any session at all: Just cancel the create/recent window and quit and it seems fine.

yeah, could be 10.12.6 .. 8Gb of ram maybe .. does it still happen on Closing a blank session ?? hmm ..

also: does it happen if you Shift Start PT without any plugins loaded .. even though they are in your plugins folder .. just curious ..

i wish i could repro here ..

You guys were right, of course. I re-attempted my 1-by-1 introduction of 3rd-party plugins. The crash went away until this guy went in:

Guitar Rig 5 (v5.2.2)

Taking it back out resolves the problem again, even with all the other 3rd party plugins installed.

Anyone else got this plugin and 12.8.1 who can confirm if the same happens for them?

I'm also opening a ticket with NI on this.

Thanks. Definitely wish it was related to a plugin less central to my sessions!

Interesting (but probably coincidental) that the main problems plugins I'm seeing mentioned for 12.8.1 are Guitar Rig 5 & Amplitube 4 - amp emulation stuff.

Just to re-iterate, this very same plugin wasn't an issue with 12.7.1.
