Default What\'s the usual process for recording MIDI tracks in Protools, and Korg Triton?

Hi,

I just bought a Korg Triton on the weekend, and I have a MIDI rookie question around what sort of process people usually use to record such devices to Protools:

1) How much stuff do people normally record on a single MIDI channel in Protools? ie. do I record all percussion on a single channel, or is it more advisable to separate each sound onto a different MIDI channel? What are the pros and cons of either way?

2) Btw. does anyone who owns a Triton sometimes use it as an effects unit for vocals or other line level stuff? The documentation says you can do this (makes sense since you can apply effects to your line in stuff when sampling), just curious if anyone does and their satisfaction with the results.

The Triton is pretty cool by the way! But so is Pro Tools!

Thanks,

Shan Plourde

Hello there Shan.

Firstly, if you are new to midi and plan on using midi for most of your tracks, my I suggest you buy yourself a book or two on midi programming. You can get a few good ones from Amazon etc... well worth the money!

Secondly, do u have an ext mixer or are u using PT mixer? If you are using PT mixer then I'm guessing your Korg's outputs are connected to your digi gears aux inputs yeah? Also your Korg should be connected to your midi interface via midi cables in->out & out->in.

If so you need to create and aux input track in PT, and assign it to the inputs where the Korg is connected, in order to hear the Korg, then create a midi track or two, to input midi notes/data on. Record arm the midi track and play a tune, press stop listen to it/quantize it ... etc.

I record all my midi stuff on seperate channels, even drums, the advantage of this, is that you can then effect each sound individually without messing up others. It's your choice, the only limiting factor is how many midi ports you have.

Confused yet? that book is starting to sound like a good idea huh?

good luck
