Default FW Hubs vs. Daisychaining

Ok, so I just added 2 more 250G FW drives to my setup to hold all of my samples and sound effects. I keep my work on a separate FW drive so it can travel with me from studio to theatre. Since I'm always moving this drive around, I placed it at the end of the chain so I wouldn't have to unmount and unplug the other drives.

Now, searching through the drives, like when I attempt to open a session or import audio, has become extremely slow. I'm even noticing a bit of a slow down when opening volumes and folders using the finder.

When my "travel" drive is hooked up to my TiBook, it performs at proper speed. When the two "effects" drive are left by themselves on the Tower, they operate fast as well....it's just when they're all together that things slow down.

I have another FW port available, but my DVD-RW is plugged in there. (along with some other drives)

Would adding a powered hub to my chain of hard-drives improve the speed?

Also, I haven't noticed any problems with playback/recording with all these drives hooked together, but then again, I haven't done much over 8 stereo tracks yet.

We tried daisy chaining a bunch at work with poor results. I hooked up a powered hub and everything is OK now.

Good Luck
