Default Re: S6 Tip ‘o the Day

Yep, that's pretty much it.

I will note that it is not 100% necessary to tweak the service order of your EUCON NIC to make it first. I just looked at my system and my Dante / local network NIC (which is separate from the EUCON NIC) is set to be first.

You can also simply COMMAND+K then enter the IP address of the Master Touch Module. If you don't know the address you can use a network scanner. I really like this one personally. Also not a bad idea to know who and what is on your network! :)

Default Master Post Module - Overview

Let's take a closer look at the Master Post Module option for S6 and S4 systems. The Master Post Module is a dedicated film-paddle style interface which allows users to populate the 10 locations with tracks and save groups of record tracks spanning multiple workstations within Post Layouts. Just like Track and Meter Layouts, these Post Layouts can automatically be saved back to the Pro Tools session by enabling the option under Settings > System - Auto-Load From Titles And Sessions, and ticking the Post Layouts option. Here's an image showing the overview of the controls on the module:

Let's first examine the process of accessing my dedicated Stem Recorder system and selecting tracks from that Pro Tools rig titled RECORD, and finally adding them to individual Post Layouts.

To get to the Stem Recorder, we are going to use Shift + WS to first access the Workstations page. Next, touch the RECORD workstation to Focus on the Stem Recorder so we can select the tracks to populate. Press the Tracks button to return back to the Tracks matrix view.

Hold Shift on the Master Module while touching Assign Post on the touchscreen. This will bring up the familiar destination track scroller at the bottom of the Tracks page interface, except now each of the track blocks will be labeled with Post 1 through X. Continue the process in exactly the same manner you use to create Track Layouts. While in Assign, first touch the desired tracks in the desired order, then touch the block on the bottom of the destination scroller to place them into the Post Layout. Touch Store and give your Post Layout a name. Press Store again to finalize. Continue collecting tracks from one or multiple workstations and populating them into Post Layouts. Empty track blocks can sometimes help break up views such as the first Post Layout which included VCA Master of 7.1.2 Beds and Objects for DX, MX and FX.

A few preferences to examine... From Settings > System under Auto-Load From Titles and Sessions it is recommended to tick both Post Layouts as well as the Post Module State - which restores any Linked or Locked tracks for the attached Post Modules.

From the Tracks > Local Options you can determine (just like Track Layouts) the number of Post Strips in Post Layout in addition to the behavior when multiple Post Modules are added to a system - either independent or Mirrored with the option Mirror Post Strips on Multiple Post Modules.

Finally, from the main Settings > User preferences, enable the option for Post Module Sends Record with Arm to have a Punch In on the Post Module trigger a Transport Record Arm command in Pro Tools. It is also recommended to enable Use Pro Tools Track Record Mode Colors so that the Post Module paddles reflect the primed or punched state when in Destructive Punch record mode.

Default Custom XY Mapping of Joysticks

Let’s take a closer look at some of the extended functionality available on the Joystick Module available for both S6 & S4. In addition to panning mono or stereo elements within a channel-based (BED) mode or a Dolby Atmos (OBJECT) mode, each of the dual joysticks set into the Panner can be mapped to two different parameters (X & Y) by using any plug-ins or sends contained on the Attentioned track. The Joystick module receives incoming tracks from your attached Workstation through the process of simply Attentioning one or multiple tracks. The preference Assign Right Joystick Timeout is used when assigning multiple mono tracks from your Workstation. After this user-definable time period expires, pressing Attention for another mono track on the surface will simply replace the Left side panner. For this example, we are looking at a Stereo element - so it will automatically occupy both sides of the Joystick Panner.

The Assign X Assign Y switch located on each side of the Panner Module is used to map any touch sensitive parameter from the surface to either side of the Joystick Panner. Simply press Assign X Assign Y, which should flash and indicate on the OLED display that X is waiting to be assigned. Touch any encoder for a parameter from the vertical channel, docked Attention knobs on the Master Module or even a knob module in local expand or as a dedicated On Attention Knob Expand Zone. Repeat the same process for the Y parameter. Repeat the same process for the Right Side of the Panner. X & Y are independent for both sides of the Panner Module and can be addressed independently. Once the mappings are complete, you can toggle between standard Pan Mode and Custom Mapping mode by simply toggling each Assign X Assign Y button. As a visual reference, the pucks displayed in Custom Mapping mode will be drawn in Purple. Press Shift + Assign X Assign Y to write over the existing custom mappings.

Experiment with different combinations of parameter sets for creative manipulation of processing and mixing elements for targeted tracks on the Joystick Module.

Default Creative Use of VCA Masters & Spill Zones

Let's take a closer look at a few different ways of using VCA Masters and Spill Zones to maximize efficiency and improve workflow - regardless of the size of your particular console. Spill Zones are user definable, spanning from 1 to X Faders and can be 1/3 of the total real estate on your console. Consider Spill Zone Left, Spill Zone Right, and the remaining Banked Channel Faders as 3 distinct chunks of real estate which you can populate with session elements.

VCA Masters are great for automation, gain staging, grouped control, optimized navigation, quick access and managing large numbers of tracks within a small space. Consider creating groups assigned to VCA Masters beyond the basic food groups within your template to include applications like SubMasters or Chains, FX Returns, ALL - one fader to rule them all, Cue Masters and more.

Experiment with the concepts of Spill Zones, VCA's, Locked Channels and Auto-Spill to improve the efficiency of navigating your template. VCA Masters can even be placed within custom Track Layouts providing a whole other level of control, power and efficiency.

Default Monitoring Macros

Let's explore a few simple shortcuts by creating macros for monitoring functions with S6 & MTRX. I've added a few new entries into the User Soft Keys, however you can place them anywhere on the surface that makes sense. These are simple efficiency switches for changing sources and destinations for the Control Room which is part of your DADman Monitor Profile. The 2 Macros are composed of Surface Soft Keys and are as follows:

DVS + 2.1:
Change the Control Room Input to Dante Virtual Soundcard and the Output to 2.1 - which is Left / Right plus some Bass Managed LFE.

RMU + Atmos:
Change the Control Room Input to Atmos (MADI Speaker outputs from the RMU) and the Output to Atmos - which is 7.1.4 using MTRX DA's.

For my particular Monitor Profile, the Main EUCON output is Atmos - 7.1.4, Alt1 is 5.1 and Alt2 is 2.1. Your ordering and allocation may vary - so assign appropriately. If necessary, it would also be possible to add a 3rd function to the Macro to engage a FoldDown for example.
