Default D-Fi for Sound Design?

How does D-Fi compare to Hyperprizm or Kyma? Can I get by with D-Fi for some basic sound design?

Tough one to answer since it depends on taste and experience: D-Fi offers a lot of grinding, modulating, distorting, alienating...all pretty rough, but useable.
Kyma is a dedicated environment which actually lets you mold and fold sound in all directions. Hyperprizm is slightly outdated IMHO

For sounddesign, go with:
- SoundHack, RossTools, Thonk (all great Freeware, xperience needed)
- SonicWORX, MetaSynth (good bang for the buck)
- GRM Tools, Waves FX Pack, Soundblender (PT plugins)

Ditto on SoundBlender (real-time) and MetaSynth (non real-time). Don't forget BIAS's SFX Machine (non RT). Incidentally I quite enjoy D-Fi (RT).

Sorry for all the paranthetical references.

I've checked out the photos and info on Soundblender, GRM Tools and Waves Pro Fx. So far I'm drawn to Waves (cool picture ). Sound Blender seems simplistic with it's one interface but many presets ... guess I shouldn't write it off until I hear it.
Here's the deal Kyma IS a possibility but I'd rather go the plug-in route with something that has similar flexibility.
I'll wait and research. Anyone else???

Don't sleep on SoundBlender. Very powerful tool. PITA to edit, and few presets are usable, but many are a good starting point.

So far, for my taste I'm liking Sound Blender and Di-Fi (on the surface) without being able to listen/test yet.

more opinions?

I responded:
Well I need to chat with someone
who's using the Kyma with a PT's Mix + to pick their brains on
how they have it hooked up and how they're using it. As I said I
havn't used it but it is available to me (soon). I'm a little
intimidated because I heard Kyma was very deep ... and I didn't
want the headache. Working on spots, I've become a "speed
demon" and don't want to get held up by battling with Kyma.

The plug-in route seems so ... "within ProTools" and cool. Must I learn a whole new "deep" blah, blah, blah? LOL

Wow. The Kyma site told me A LOT! Unlimated. I am not affraid
anymore ... but still would like to know how you Pro's are using it
from day to day (how it's hooked up with your PT's system). ie: Can we have your Kyma result play in sync with your PT's session & pic for auditioning?

Kyma seems very cool,

You can try SoundBlender for free for 30 days. Just download from www.wavemechanics.com Also, Kyma is very cool, and made by some great people. Very deep and programmable.
