I recommend sticking to the list of compatible Metal capable GPUs in Apple's latest support article.

I recently replace my AMD 5770 in my Mac Pro with a Sapphire RX 580. It worked perfectly without any drivers in High Sierra.

Note that before upgrading, you will need to get an additional PCIE power cable as these GPUs require two of them. Also, if you're running an older Apple Cinema display, you'll need a mini Display Port to regular Display Port adapter.

Cool deal. I only get CPU(-9093) spikes when I open a Waves plugin to make changes. No spikes/errors if the plugin windows is closed. (64 buffer)

I've got the Sapphire HD 7950 in mind that OWC sells - it has 3072 MB of VRAM.

Would love to hear some thoughts!
Thanks,

I also have a Mac Pro 5,1. My ATI Radeon HD 5770 went to heaven a week ago and I replaced it with the Sapphire HD 7950 from OWC. It's working well except the display "blinks" once in a while when running certain programs, including PT. It also blinks when streaming videos on Firefox but not on Chrome, but that's possibly because I deleted Flash player.

That said, it's blinking much less often now than it did at first.

Not getting blinks here.
Double check (Move) the Mac PC switch possibly.
I use with three (1080-4K-1080) (DVI=DVI, mdp to dp, mdp active to DVI)
MacOs 10.14 seemed to better it's performance.

Installed the MSI RX560 Aero 4g.
Works well and improved my Protools cpu spikes/errors that I was having with plugins GUIs at 64buffer.

On startup, the apple boot screen only displays for about 2 sec then it goes to the login screen. Other than that, everything works. OS10.13.6

Did you get this sorted?

I am having the same issues and it's driving me insane. Have just bought a 6-core processor to put in the old 5,1 to try and resolve this issue. Also have my eyes on Sapphire HD 7950.

I can't handle beat detective being this unresponsive. See signature for system specs.

Having upgraded the Mac Pro 5,1 CPU from Quad-Core 2.4GHz to Six-Core 3.46GHz and the graphics card from from the Radeon 5770 to an AMD Radeon R9 280X with 3GB or VRAM, the difference is marked. I have attached a screenshot of a big session and you'll see the load on CPU and HDX. This was able to play on loop without any errors.

The pain with upgrading the graphics card is of course powering it alongside the HDX card, however if you're handy with a soldering iron you can splice the HDX power connector into the graphics card power cable so the graphics card is still getting it's juice from both PCI Aux Power Sockets. I've heard the HDX only needs power for the fan so is not a huge draw.

I have more tests to do so will report back.
