you turn it on a track that you do not want to 'mute' when you solo another track. i use it because i send everything to a submix aux track before it goes to the master fader... example - i send vocals to vocal mix aux track then from the vocal mix aux to master fader...if i were to solo my vocal track i wouldnt hear anything! the vocal mix aux track would have to be in solo safe so the sound would go from the vocal to the vocal sub mix to the master output. also, i put all my effects on aux tracks and send them to the mix --- if they are not solo-safed you will not hear your effects when you solo a track.

this would have made no sense to me 3 months ago. multiplatinum makes a great mixing video and it helps to see this stuff in action.

sure thing http://www.multi-platinum.com/

i bought their mixing video two weeks ago. it is super! i did the download version and it comes in 4 parts...the 2nd video gave me more help than i had found on my own in the past two years. he walks you through mixing a session from beginning to end...every single step. the video is 8 hours long! it really helped me understand why to use AUX tracks for effects and sub mixes. he shows you how to set up I/O setting to make it seem much easier as well.

for free help make sure you watch these:
