Have a look at AutoHotkey.

Also, search for Shan and AutoHotkey (Shan is/was one of the PT Gurus) and you'll find lots of posts like this one.
thanks very much for the tip, will look into it ASAP.

how are you finding windows performance? as much as i will miss finder and safari and other things, i remember windows having much better low latency performance with lots of plugins. The last time i confirmed this for myself was 2 years back on windows 7, with studio one windows vs S1 OSX on the same machine, windows was via bootcamp even! Win version got almost double the plugins before crackles.

Is win 10 performing like this also?

Also, if you do some research you will see that a good deal, if not all, of the telemetry services get turned back on again each time Win 10 updates itself.

We should not have to fight with the OS to keep a system stable.

So I have trouble calling unpredictable updates, and loss of control of my own systems a win.

And my original point was - Microsoft still has 2+ years of mainstream support on Win 7. It is not obsolete! But AVID (AGAIN) want's to shirk their responsibility to support a current OS. There is no way to put lipstick on that pig.

What are you talking about? Microsoft concluded mainstream support for Windows 7 almost two years ago. Windows 8 mainstream support ends in a matter of weeks!!!! Beyond a few years of security patching, Windows 7 is toast. Old news. Obsolete. Even if a lot of people still use it, there is really no pretending otherwise. Microsoft Germany even caused quite a kerfuffle earlier in the year when they basically advised that the corporate world that Windows 7 was nearing mediocrity in the current software/hardware/computer technology climate and plans to upgrade to newer versions should be put in place.

What is wrong with staying with 12.8.2? It is a decent version of Pro Tools? Heck, a lot of people still use PT10! You either have the desire to stay current, or you don't... Otherwise you really are just trying to have your cake and eat it too.

I really don't care if they stop "supporting" Win7 as long as they don't put a limitation that stops us from installing the new versions on Win7. Infuriates me when developers resort to this.

FYI- I tried Win10 and it did NOT play nice with my 32 channel interface which was not cheap.

I find it’s been great. I’ve had no issues aside from midi drivers (and I did that to myself) and that was only recently.

I’ve been very happy with Win10 and it’s very snappy. I still have a MBP but that’s for the odd and end projects in FCP. And recording off my studio live mixer.

So AVID, once my current support runs out, you won't be seeing any more of my money!!
W10 isn't that bad. There's a piece of software called O&O Shut Up 10 (OOSU10) that can turn off the forced updates, telemetry and other stuff. Currently, I'm running the very latest W10 with all updates, and it's pretty cool. You don't have to give up PT because of that.

Considering that Win 7 has been supported by Avid since PT 8.03, I don't think it is unreasonable to now focus on Win 10 and beyond. It may mean more stability in PT as Avid will not have to consider backwards compatibility with Win 7. I currently run Win 7 but have no problem with updating to Win 10 when the time comes. I'm thankful I don't have to contend with Mac OS updates.

I really get annoyed by posts like this. Windows 7 had its time. Windows 10 is the future. Any future hardware won't be supported by Windows 7 because Microsoft has built-in checks that newer cpus and hardware won't be able to receive Windows updates. Windows 7 is old and has outlived itself.

Windows 10 has support for DX12, NVME, EFI, and they are constantly adding new features to Windows 10 every 6 months.

The LTSB version is the one closest to Windows 7 and will be supported until 2019 when the next LTSB version comes out. This version is for enterprise customers, but has all the telemetry and modern apps stripped from it.

Windows 10 works better with solid state drives.
In the end, if you are unhappy either don't change your hardware or you can jump to the beta-fest that is MAC. That's also if you like paying everything that is over priced for the same hardware that goes into a PC.

Mac is garbage and will always be garbage. Just because its built on Unix it doesn't make it great. Hardware support is limited.

Now from my experience Windows 10 LTSB 2016 (1603) is the best, most stable version of the OS (when you have 1.5 years of mature updates chances are it will be).

1703 was garbage. 1709 is more garbage. However 1803 is shaping up to be REALLY NICE. I have a separate PC to run these pre-releases and it definitely feels fast and solid in pre-release compared to 1709.

Settle down now.

Let's not turn a discussion about Win7 support into nonsense like this.
