Most high end facilities still have tape machines. In fact tapes and recording heads are still being produced today. There's even a machine that enables seemless tape to pro tools integration where even the editing you are doing in pro tools will be reflected on tape. It's called Clasp. In fact many of the big names, even though they are working within pro tools, still uses tapes today.

So that's a bit erroneous to say gently.

BSc sound engineering and a Masters degree in post production in television and film here, total cost about £26000, £4500 of which I had to pay out of my own pocket up front. That was 5 years ago since I left. Now same courses would cost around £40,000 not including cost of living. What I learned as a student before and after I left was that these schools are businesses and they make promises they cannot keep and lie their arses off about what you need to get in the industry. What I learned pretty quick is that the qualifications I have are not what the industry want. What they want is experience in the field and the only way you can do that is doing it for yourself. Having a commitment, passion and a strong work ethic even when your working for nothing is what will get you far, especially if your young.

Experience in the field without knowledge is nothing as you could learn all the wrong things. On the other hand, the right knowledge and the experience will get you further than just experience alone. Sorry if the institution you went to sold you a bubble. But no one should go into this field expecting that things would be easy and just fall into your lap.

Indeed we do, but the question is about return on investment.

I got paid for learning from my mentors. The same is true of my stepson who is 30 years younger. There were no recording schools when I started however he never went to film school. You just need to go where the work is and meet the right people.

Never said a career should fall into your lap. I would rather have my degrees than not have them and yes I agree I wouldn't know how to do a post session properly in Pro Tools without training. But it's about how they sell courses to students. Like how they don't tell you their qualifications are not wanted or needed by the industry, but sell it like it will give you a huge advantage. The industry in the UK at least is deeply rooted in the tradition of taking in young runners and schooling them from the inside out. I've even seen paid intern positions were they state "we don't want applicants with degrees" and "applicants fresh out of sound school won't be considered".

The ethos of the industry is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" this is especially true of the TV industry. Formal training is relatively new and is trying to fit itself into an industry that's 60 years old. The problem with schools is they like to think education and the industry is an established relationship. Nothing could be further from the truth.
