Default New Exciting Pro tools 8 Problem

This has been going since day one of my PT 8 upgrade
The session stops and I've been getting this error message
"PROBLEM DETECTED WITH AUDIO CLOCK PLEASE CHECK THAT YOUR CLOCK SOURCE AND SAMPLE RATE ARE CORRECT"
I have to hit the stop button on the trasnport, go into setup/hardware/ and change the clock source setting. then I get a message that says
"Clock choice is incorrect reverting to internal clock" and then things work again until the next crash.

Now a newer problem is occurring. This crash happens and a new error message appears "PROTOOLS CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH HARDWARE"
and I get asked to save the session. Then I have to restart the computer and repair my harddrive using Mac Drive. then I can re open the session.
I'll post a sandra report in a few minutes but would be grateful for any insight to this problem. thanks

"repair my harddrive using Mac Drive"?? Assuming you are on a PC, are you running sessions from a Mac formatted drive? Which version of MacDrive are you running(or is it the included HFS+ support that is available as a check box when you install PT7.4 or PT8)? What interface are you using? If its an 002, maybe its an indication of a pending power harness failure? Do you actually have an external clock in your system, or is that message out of the clear blue?

Sorry I'm in the middle of working on a project so I have to come back to this when I can.

It's a PC that worked flawlessly with pt7.4

It's a Digi 002r...don't think it's anything to do with the power harness [had that changed a long time ago]

Mac drive version 7

I do use a Symetrix 620 convertor for recording it comes in through the SPDIF

No external clock

I'd bet money it is. I changed mine, too, but when my system starts doing that, I whack it on the side nearest the power supply and it usually clears up for a few weeks. If not, I open it up and reseat the connectors, then it clears up. Temporarily.

"I do use a Symetrix 620 convertor for recording it comes in through the SPDIF"
This is an external clock and you should set Pro Tools to Sync to SPDIF when you use this device. If you don't slave the 002r to SPDIF, you will get pops and clicks whenever you try to record using the SPDIF inputs. Back to the 002r, there are plenty of folks that have replaced more than one harness and the rack version is so simple to work on, I would reseat anyway. Just pop the top and work each of the 3 harness connections 5-6 times each and see if it helps the problem. I would also refer to the general troubleshooting thread and delete the preferences folder(just in case as it sometimes clears up odd behavior).

Several potential hardware compatibility issues I see there, but I'm not sure they are related to your problem. I'll get to those in a minute.

First, you are running a multi-core CPU on Windows SP2... have you installed the Microsoft Dual-Core Hotfix? Read this from the Digidesign (er... AVID...) Support Section

Now for those compatibility issues:

Quote:
FireWire/1394 Controller/Hub : VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
Firewire interfaces with VIA chipsets are known to cause problems with Digidesign firewire hardware. You really should get one of the qualified FW cards.

Next, you're running dangerously low on free space on all of your disks. You might want to think about expanding/upgrading.

Ok I did the hotfix so let's see what happens tomorrow

When I got my firewire card I was pretty sure I checked compatibility but if it's not right which ones are recommended i'll make sure to get one asap?

Yes I just got a terabyte drive and will be archiving items there to free up space. thanks for the info!!!
