Default When Avid decided upon the AVE...

“Well lads, we need to step up and deliver a 64-bit version of Pro Tools. Oh, yes! Pro Tools 11 onwards will be 64-bit. And not only that… we will provide a new video engine!!!”

Everybody positively in the meeting room claps with both excitement and anticipation. As if more is about to happen.

“How will this work?” somebody asked.

“Well.. we still do own Media Composer, am I right or am I right, huh?”

“Yes, yes, we still do” everybody said and murmured in an agreeable tone.

“This is still a video editing application, right?

“Yes, yes, it still is” everybody said and murmured in a more agreeable tone than before. About 6dB more than before (-28dB LUFS, TV style)

“Well, let’s use that video engine for Pro Tools! I mean, it’s already here at our disposal, free to use. The answer for a stabler video within PT was always staring us straight in our eyes. We were just not looking. I know I wasn’t!..”

Exciting murmurs across the room. People nod, indicating that they grasp the concept, some people question how they did not come up with this earlier.

“Well, how are we going to incorporate the Media Composer video “engine” to Pro Tools?” someone asked.

“Oh, simples” the talker of this presentation responded. “We will use the satellite technology that we already have, but internally! You get me?! Catching my drift here? It’s a top-notch, top-of-the-hill, worth-million-bucks solution. Aaaand theeeeennnn…???”

“Then what? what? what?” the what resonating like a ping-pong delay with about 12% of feedback (in Mod Delay III), around the room.

“Then we’ll fire some more of our experienced and dedicated Pro Tools coders and add a hefty subscription price!” was the reply.

“Hoooooray!!!” everybody in a chorusy unison replied with excitement that couldn’t be as excited even if it was excited the Aphex Aural Exciter TDM (no AAX DSP back then).

“Now, let’s go to the pub everyone!!! We’ve got subscription beers and unlimited bartending support until the end of the month!!!

“Yippi!!!” Everybody cheered while exiting the meeting room.

Meanwhile, I cannot count how many AVE crashes I’ve had today.

Pro Tools is back up and running.

Back to work…

PS: This is not mean-spirited at all. I really like Pro Tools. Just a lot of time in my hands in between crashes.

Makes sense to me....and heck maybe they did use that video engine, just the implementation is screwed up. I honestly don't know

I did download and want to try out the Media Composer Free...but I couldn't get it activated on my machine - the Application Manager wouldn't log in....

I wanted to use it and it was right on time, but I had to install FCP and learn how to use it.....instead.

Nice program (Final Cut) I think I really really like it.

It was my first time with video but it worked great. Problem is once you learn something that's what your going to reach for next time

Avid couldn't use Quicktime because apple dropped support for it. AVE in 12.8 is very good. AVE fixed a lot of issue with QT too but it wasn't a very smooth start, granted.

Love the re-enactment antonis! But AVE performance is butter smooth over here. No complaints with DNxHD.

Oh, I don't doubt it at all. And I'm absolutely certain there were good reasons. I just had so many "Video Engine Failed to stop" and "Video Engine Failed to Relaunch" messages yesterday that made me question. This was by no means aggressive, or annoyed, or anything along these lines. Just aiming for the humorous I suppose. I really hope this wouldn't offend anyone!

Actually, I am beginning to realise how all the increasing updates of all the apps and plugins have sped up the workflow and increased quality. Pro Tools included of course. It is just a same that the video component kept on failing on me.

OK, great to know about 12.8. Worth the update then?

I spent over a year logging, documenting, and stopping down my work to
work with Avid on these issues, countless versions of 12.8 betas, and it paid off.

Switch to PT 12.8, and you will be free of crashes. Take my word..

I can now run a DNXHD in Protools, coming out of the native ATI Radeon card,
and Satellite a Media Composer machine together without crashes.

Best if you use DNXHD36. Stay away from H264.
