Default MBox/6.1.2 -- record automute??

I've got a G4 with the monitors coming directly out of the MBox. All of my recording is voice into mic in the same room. It's frustrating having to reach around and turn off the speakers every time I want to record. Is there a way around this?

Get a mixer.

Or - just mute the master fader and make sure you've got no other signal going to the speakers (ie. playback knob all the way to the right). Of course with this setup you can't monitor what you're recording at all, and it's still risking some nasty feedback if you happen to forget to mute your tracks. Better to get a mixer or similar to put between your Mbox and the speakers.

Well, shoot. I was trying to avoid that. I hooked up my Beringers (602 and 604), and each was ridiculously noisy. Guess I'll hafta suck it up and get a Mackie.

Not that there's anything *wrong* with that...

When I first started using an Mbox I remember being frustrated with this too. The solution? Move the switch closer to you. I use a small computer desk with the monitors on stands behind and to the sides. Getting up to switch off both monitors got old real fast. I got a power strip and mounted it to the side of the desk and plugged both monitors into it. Now I can reach over and switch off the monitors without getting up. A lot cheaper than buying a mixer! Unless, of course, you like to find excuses to spend money on more gear - then by all means, go ahead and get that mixer! There is almost always a work around for any kind of problem. Think about what engineers (and musicians) accomplished when all they had was tape! They certainly pushed the limits of their equipment.
