Mastering with WaveLab
Hi..
I used Wavelab for Mastering, and my question is : What EQ plug in is best for mastering ? Is Q10 from waves agood eq mastering plugs ? I usually used (in order): Waves Q10 Waves RCL Waves L1 UltraMaximizer Is that a good way to go for mastering ? usually I end up with the worse result than my mix. Is it just me ? Please help thanks, D

Re: Mastering with WaveLab
I find the Waves stuff very good, although I don't use the Ultramaximzer, just the C4 compressor.
I suggest you look at the Izotope Ozone mastering plugin. It is absolutely fantastic, combines all the key compnents into one interface, and is cheap (you can download a trial from thier website). You can also download thier manual which provide excellent instructions on mastering that applies to any plugins, not just theirs.

Re: Mastering with WaveLab
The Waves mastering plugins are awesome.
Linear Multiband compressor & phase linear EQ ... WOW! Also has the updated L2. These are serious plugins & I find I can do some amazingthings even with subtle tweaks. As with anything though it's all down to the operator ... if you go nuts it's easy to wreck what was a pretty good mix ... especially with too much peak limiting. Having said that ALL the Waves plugins are sonically excellent so if your finding the end result worse maybe you're just getting a bit carried away. Make sure you A/B a lot (use bypass on the Wavelab's master section) to make sure what you are doing is actually making things better. Have fun. Oz |

Compressor of your choice, then L2 or PSP Vintage Warmer....good start anyways.

Re: Mastering with WaveLab
thanks guys,
but I am curios, what do most of you guys usually do ? EQ first and then compressor ? or the other way around ? I dont' have any other EQ except waves Q4, Q10, REQ 2-6 and Q-Metric. which one I should use for mastering ? I am low on budget now so please dont advise me to get something else (but I apprecite the suggestion, amybe later when my song is on the top of the chart ) Thanks D

Re: Mastering with WaveLab
I think that you should not need to use eq in matering, execpt for mabey a high pass filter, if your mix is already good. Spend as much time getting the mix sounding as good as it can get, before importing it into wavelab. Then all you will need to do is compress a little and fade in and out.
Eq over the whole mix is risky because you cant isolate where its going. eg: Cut 400hz and the bass may sound clearer, but then the snare may loose some body. I know its easy to say, ah... i fix it in mastering, but really its in the mix that you should work on it. All of that aside, the waves plugs you mentioned are good quality and will do a good job, if you are careful how you use them.

Re: Mastering with WaveLab
Quote:
For doing the odd bit of rough mastering here I have a session setup like this: * stereo audio track (routed to bus 1+2, AND bus 3+4) * solo safe the audio track * create two stereo aux's and set their inputs to bus 1+2 and bus 3+4 (with outputs set to analog 1+2) In the preferences set the solo mode to 'non latching'. I then insert my mastering plugins on the bus 3+4 channel and have nothing on the bus 1+2 channel. Now my bus 1+2 track is the DRY mix, and bus 3+4 is the WET mix. With the solos non-latching you can then hit solo to toggle between the dry and wet version for comparison, you can then increase the channel volume on the dry mix to level match the two. Just my 2 cents Cheers, Marcus |
