The need for a separate audio file drive ended beginning with Pro Tools 11. If I were using a laptop, I would just use external drives for backups and archive files.

Please explain how that is so (unless you're specifically talking about PT11HD). PT11 has nothing to do with that; large internal ssd's are the driver here.

Considering the price to upgrade ya standard Mac Pro offering to say 2t I might be cheaper to upgrade to PT11HD..... said wif a lil sarcasm.

What about employing a server?.....

But then again..... I’m getting well away from my initial concept of what I want and that a lappy that can mostly just run a DAW in a home studio ( hell if I create such a freaking hit tune, I’d go to some professional studio or be made to hahaha) I can plug into a digital audio desk ie; the one I run my PA. If I can store as much libraries on externals then I’m hoping a 1t drive in my lappy will be enough space for the necessities.

Prior to PT 11, Pro Tools required us to use a separate audio drive from the system drive for best performance. From 11 on that was no longer required due to a change in how it worked with disks.

I have a mid 2015 rMBP, 2.6 GHz i7, 512 Gb flash drive & 16 Gb of RAM. I’m about to strip it down to just OSX, Pro Tools 2018 and Cubase Pro 9.5 for portable recording. Antelope is finally releasing a high-performance Thunderbolt driver for Windows so I’m moving back to my Win 7 PC with 4.4 GHz i7, 32 Gb of RAM, EVGA video card & 4K monitor. The rMBP will have High Sierra installed with a 120 Gb USB 3.0 external drive running Sierra for my Word, photos, email and social media.

It looks like a new MBP that supports 32 Gb of RAM is on the near horizon, but I ain’t going there.

I also have several USB 3.0 external hard drive boxes with 7200 rpm SATA drives for samples & recording along with an OWC USB 3.0 case for my Blu-ray burner. I’ve been running all these external drives connected through Anker USB 3.0 hubs finding no bottlenecks whatsoever. YMMV!

And will be priced to suit........ yikes!!!!!

32Gb of ram sounds amazing..... although unless you’re into video editing with your music or recording a symphony orchestra do you really need 32Gb ram?

If you work a lot with samplers like Kontakt and EW Play 32gig of ram is a good thing to have. Also with more ram, and a PT version that supports it, you have can use the ram as a disk cache. I have 48 gig in my 2012 cheesegrater and quite often need that extra ram above 32 gig because I tend to load all my samples into ram when I use EW Play libraries (I don't have an ssd for my samples yet).

Please explain further or provide a link for what you say. No matter how one slices this loaf of bread you're still pulling bits & bytes through one pipe and if things are dense enough throughput is going to slow down.

And that horizon was barely 48hrs.... just check Apple’s online store here in Australia last night and 32Gb ram MBP is here..... and affordable too.... plus 6 core 8gen Intel core i9.

Not too concerned about the latter, although I’m sure some will.... finally placing my order this week..... will be nice to use PT without it crashing like a pack a day smoker after a couple laps around the track.
