Default One Annoying Issue With 2020.11

This has happened twice now when I boot up and launch PT in the AM. I'll load my first song and I get the infamous 9173. This is on projects that are no where near using many resources (same projects day before running at 128 with 20% usage).

Doesn't matter if I go to the highest buffer. Doesn't matter if I go to the highest buffer in a project with one audio track only. Audio engine will not move forward without the error. Also doesn't change anything if I unclick optimizations for low buffer and such.

Two fixes-

1) Trash prefs- works but a crap workaround
2) Pick another engine besides HDX (like computer audio) and restart with that engine and then reselect HDX and restart AGAIN.

Do you have another/better workaround?

No, we just press OK as it is something wrong with the Pro Tools programming on the developer side and has been there for years and years.

Some versions are better and then BAM it’s back again

Here is already a 2 page thread about this on 2020.11 .... who are BETA testing these releases!??

As sooooo many have this 9173 error it HAS to come up at beta stage.

Sadly clicking OK doesn't work for me. This is a high price to pay for low buffer optimization.

I just re-upped my $400 annual on Friday. Sucker. Hopefully they can figure it out and fix.

Hey Southsidemusic, I haven't been having any 9173 issues so far. All I had was some video engine issues that a reboot solved for me. I'd be happy to try to replicate your issue over here and see if I can help figure out what is going on. But I'm not on HDX hardware, just running lowly PT Ult software only with an RME interface. But so far other than the initial video glitch 20.11 is fine here. Oh I'm also running a 7,1 16-core MacPro

Thanks a million for the offer. As our productions are for big artists I can try to find a private session that is not a release candidate with these errors and send you. This has been a plague for soo long Avid will probably call it a ”feature” soon enough and make us pay more for it on our support plans

The initial 9173 on first play seems like a crapshoot. I usually don't get it and the other day, every frigging startup even using built in output with a fully disk cached tiny session. And then it's gone away, no idea why and I could not troubleshoot. (and to be clear that system did _not_ have spindump disabled).

Not being disk cached can cause this some of the time (wait until he cache meter turns green). But that's just sometimes, there may well be some spurious very random thing going on here.

You might also try disabling spindump. I have no idea if that affects these initial startup errors much.. have not been able to test that. But now I've gone back and disabled spin dump everywhere.... which of course with infrequent problems won't tell me if it helped or not.

So maybe my point/question is: do you folks seeing this on initial startup have spindump and taildump disabled?

What’s spindump and taildump? Sorry for my lack of knowledge.

Haven't seen a 9173 so far (as he knocks on wood). Even with banging on 2020.11 hard with me messing about in the dark mode file making changes. Make change in dark mode file, start PT, open/run a 30 track session, check what the gui looks like, quit PT, repeat.
