Default Mac to PC and back: hardrive formatting??

I'm working with Windows XP at home and Mac OSX at school, both with PT 7.4 and am just wondering if there is any sure way to format an external firewire drive so that they're cross-compatible and won't involve having to dump files from the external onto the internal drives when I change computers. I'm not the most technically saavy so any info on reading and writing across both platforms would really help me out here. Thanks guys.
Dave.
