Default ProTools SE Fast Track No Record Level

I have read several threads about this but NONE has had a solution.
I have a 32bit Windows 7 box with enough of everything.
Install was good, Guitar level comes thru Headphones on Fast Track and RCA's.
When I attempt to record on ANY setting, and enable the track and identify the track I get no level, nothing, zip zilch nada. If I adjust the guitar type amp I get static from the higher gain presets but still no guitar input from me.
I have tried the Alt-K option, no result.
Can someone please clue me in on what simple human error I am making??
