Default max sample rate of mbox using external converter

If I'm using my mbox with an external converter, is my maximum sample rate still 48k? I'll using the mbox with cubase 5 (so there is no software limitation). I'm going from my mic->pre->a/d converter->mbox via spdif.
If my external converter is doing the converting, and mbox is simply a digital interface or pass through, can I record at 96k? Also, are the "stand-alone" drivers stable if I'm using a third-party app? Thanks for your help.
Josh
