Default High Input Microphone Gain on Digirack002

I have just purchased an ElectroVoice RE-20 microphone for use on my Digirack002 and Control 8 surface. I am concerned about the gain level that I have to use to obtain unity with this mike. On the Mike1 input of the Digirack, it is turned almost as far as the pot will turn clockwise. (about 5;30) Doing this and having to use the very end of the pot gives my a great deal of static in my headphones but not in the recording. But I still have no headroom in the gain and I have to have the voice about three inches from the popscreen not allowing any headroom for distance miking or for other positioning. My question is this. Does anyone have experience with this mike and are your settings the same? What else should I know about this mike? Or should I return the mike as defective and get a replacement that has a fuller output. Thankxx in advance for your replies..

Why not check the published sensitivity specs for that mic, and compare against something else you've got?

Odd that you claim to hear noise in the 'phones, but not on the recorded track, when running the gain nearly wide open. If you hear it, and you're NOT in low latency mode, it means the noise got to ProTools and was recorded.

The RE20 does have a pretty low output, so yes, you'll probably have to crank the gain quite a bit.

It was developed for use as a radio mic, so it's typically used in pretty close proximity - if your pop screen is a couple inches away from the mic and you're a couple inches away from the pop screen, you're farther away from it than most people when using it to voice. I work in radio and use one everyday.

You might consider taking it back and "upgrading" to the N/D version of the RE20 - it has a higher output.

Don't know about the static issue - they sound unrelated, if the symptoms really are as you say.
