Default how to hear sounds in different tracks

No matter which track I click, I can only hear the sound from the most recently created track. How do I set up pro tools M-Powered so I can click on a track and instantly hear the sound I assigned to that track?

In this picture, you can see I have selected track 3. But when I press the keys on my keyboard, I hear the sound assigned to track 8.

Do you have 'use first selected track' in PT's MIDI preferences?

I don't see the option to do that in the MIDI preferences window, as shown in this screenshot.

Midi and Instrument tracks can get unwieldy pretty quick. By nature(and by default), Instrument(and MIDI) tracks receive on all 16 midi channels and from all midi incoming signals. Maybe try assigning each track to its own midi channel?

What do you mean you don't see it in the screenshot you posted? It's right there: Default Thru Instrument & first selected MIDI track. It looks like you have that selected.

I seem to have solved the problem. Channel assignments or Preferences for MIDI thru didn't seem to matter. I just added instrument tracks one at a time so I could make the individual tracks white by clicking on them in the Mix window (look at the picture where the arrow-cursor clicked and turned Inst16 white). Thanks anyways for the responses. I suppose I'm just rusty since it's been 4 years since I've last written music.

I think there's something else going on because your 'remedy' isn't making any sense. It's not a matter of not having written music in 4 years but getting along with PT and how it works and that isn't easy especially if iot's your first foray into digital recording with a computer.
