Default Cannot Create New Sessions because of Hard Drive?

Why is it that in ProTools 8LE for PC i cannot create a new session because my drive is formatted as FAT or FAT32?

Im not a computer guru, but reallys what the difference? Does it need 2 be in NTFS or any other format? Someone help me out here, it would be greatly appreciated.

Opening and closing sessions is no problem, only creating sessions and saving them to drive. Im using a Buffalo 500gb firewire drive.. 7200rpm.. dont know what other info i need 2 post..

thanks in advance

FAT32 support is going away but may not be the problem. One thing to check is the formatting by right-clicking on My Computer, select Manage, then click on Disk Management. A window will open(if you have several drives, drag the lower right corner down to expand this window). Look at the left-most box for your audio drive and look for the word BASIC or DYNAMIC. If you see BASIC, that is good but if you see DYNAMIC, the drive will need to be reformatted to BASIC(DYNAMIC drives will not work for recording with PT). If you need to reformat for this issue, I see no reason not to go NTFS.

I do have a couple of older FAT32 Firewire drives I now use for archives. They won’t properly run sessions on PT8. I’ve tried.

Yes it needs to be NTFS.

PT dropped support for Recording/Playback of FAT32 in either 7.4 or 8.0. I remember the Poll. I'm about 99% positive on this but would have to check the manual to be absolutely positive.

FAT32 is like DODO bird. Its extinct. The only reason to keep it around would be. 1) You have a computer somewhere running Windows ME or older. 2) You regularly transfer stuff from a Mac.

If it's reason #1 please send it to the nearest recycler. If its #2 than install HFS+ support in PT or MacDrive.

NTFS is vastly superior to FAT32.

External drives are routinely formatted FAT32 since its pretty universal. Works with Windows, Mac, Linux, NAS boxes. etc. But its really not the best choice. NTFS is a lot more stable.
