Another good test for the OP is to test with a condenser mic and phantom power. Reason being, a dynamic mic(like an SM57) will work if pin 2 or 3 in the mic cable is broken, but at a reduced volume(maybe what's happening??), but a phantom-powered condenser will not work at all Another option would be to use an external preamp(feed the line inputs of the Mbox) and the ART Pro MPA is quite good on a low budget
