Start here:http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...ility/en352429

Pro Tools LE(6,7,8) can usually be purchased second hand, but remember you MUST get the authorization code. For LE8.x, the code would start with "DIGI08......" and will include lower case letters and spaces(and must be input exactly correct). Pro Tools 9(and later) requires an iLok license(PT10 and up require an iLok 2). With LE, the driver is USUALLY installed automatically. With 9 and up, the driver is a separate download and gets installed BEFORE Pro Tools software.

Hi, I have the old Apple PowerPC G4 (mirror door) and I’m currently running Pro Tools 7 on a 002 Rack with OSX 10.4.11. My planned upgrade has severe budget constraints, so I would like to keep the 002 Rack and buy maybe a 12-core or 8-core Mac Pro, second hand. My question is what would be the latest Pro Tools I could run on the 002 Rack (my research on this site suggests version 10) and also what would be the latest OS I could run that would be compatible. (I’m reading 10.6.7 to 10.7.4). Could you confirm I’m on target? And excuse my ignorance here; how would I buy Pro Tools version 10, and how would I load an earlier (10.6-10.7) OS version if the Mac Pro I bought was running something later? Assistance appreciated. Hope this is the right place to post.

Given the right version of OSX, you can probably go right up to 12.4

The probably most useful version of Pro Tools for your model of Macbook
http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...-13-specs.html
and the 002 will be Pro Tools LE8.0.5. on macOS Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

You can get Pro Tools LE8 from Ebay, just make sure it´s a trusted seller like this one for example.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AVID-Digides...4AAOSwnHZYSPGO
Always ask the seller for an existing and working Authorization Code for the LE8 software before buying.
You don´t have to register your software with Digidesign/Avid (it will work without anyway) but you need
a still valid Auth Code for your LE8 software.

You can directly update from PTLE8.0 to the latest version LE8.0.5.
Install LE8.0 and then without opening Pro Tools install the the LE8.0.5 update.
Repair disk permissions and shut down your system. Connect the 002, restart your system and you
should be good to go.
Get the 8.0.5 update from there.
http://secure.digidesign.com/service...rticleId=43353

The hardware drivers for your 002 will be included already in the LE8 installer so you need not install
any extra driver for it.

Before you go to install PTLE8 on your system you have to make a clean install of macOS Snow Leopard
10.6.x, update it to the max, install this combo update
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399?...S&locale=de_AT
restart your system (still not connecting the 002) and set up the required OSX optimizations for Pro Tools.
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/t...oting/en349739

Further you may replace the internal OS drive of this Macbook with a 7200rpm hard drive as well as put in
all possible 4GB Ram in this Macbook if you haven´t done this already.
The suitable drive.
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/West...al/WD5000LPLX/
The memory.
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Othe.../5300DDR2S4GP/
Install video for both.
https://eshop.macsales.com/installvi...ook_13_mem_hd/

Finally get two new Firewire 400 cables as these are often a source of trouble when older (two because
you will have to build a "Firewire chain" including your 002 and an external hard drive you need for Pro Tools
recording...like described later in this posting)
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/1394A66036/

Important-always power off your 002 as well as your computer completely if you want to connect or disconnect
the Firewire connection! The 002 may get damaged if you will not do so.

Yeah, required for the work with Pro Tools...a second separate (external) drive which you have to use for your
Pro Tools sessions and audio files. With Pro Tools (unlike with other DAWs) you may not record your stuff to the
internal system drive but have to use another separate hard drive to record to/to playback your sessions from.

This second "Pro Tools" drive has to be a 7200rpm HDD again and has to be connected via Firewire at least.
No 5400rpm drive and no USB 2 connection!
Such a one would be useable for this application.
https://www.amazon.com/Fantom-Profes...0%2Bdrive&th=1
For your 2006 Macbook you still need an external Firewire 400 drive which is extremely hard to find nowadays,
so this is the last one I have found. Get it as long as it will be available.

What you may do is to daisy-chain this external Firewire drive and your 002 which means you connect the 002
to your Macbook and the external drive to the second Firewire 400 port on your 002.
Usually you do it the other way round, the drive first and the 002 as the second one but this external drive has
one Firewire 400 port only, the 002 still has got two FW ports...you know.
Make sure you always eject and power off the external drive first before turning off the 002 so that the drive will
not get hurt and lose it´s data. This may sound kinda pedestrian but the only way you can save your external FW
drive from being damaged using it over a longer period of time this way.

You see, there´s a lot to consider to make sure this system is going to work as it is supposed to but if you mind
all this stuff it should work out finally.

The best of success to you and lots of fun with your future set up.

Cheers.

Hi This was a great help. Its my first post on here and I don't seem to be able to find your name.

Any help with the following is great full received as I am a musician and not very tacky!
I am running a 2006 system Digidesign 02 6.9.2 through a Mac OS X Tiger 10/4/3
The CARI-AD1250G external drive has a blue light; all cable are ok but the MNAC cant find it.
What can I replace it with. I see reference to Oxford912 in places but not in current items for sale
The available connection is 400 6 pin firewire.

Thanks

Hi, thanks.

I´m afraid this is going to be a tough one. Your system is really old and you hardly can get new parts for it today.
On the other hand it is never a good idea to buy an used hard drive, even more if the system of the drive is that
old (FW400).

So the only rather safe solution I have found would be to buy one of these from OWC
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Othe.../MS8U3H7500GB/

and use this adapter cable.
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/1394B96012/

You can´t do that with any FW800 drive yet those OWC drives come with this option. These particular OWC drives
further have been used for Pro Tools systems for decades successfully, from the early LE versions up to today´s PT12.

Under normal circumstances this should work out.
Another option would be to buy any used FW400 from Ebay or any other sellers but I rather would not recommend this.

However make sure it´s a 7200rpm hard drive! Anything slower will not work with Pro Tools properly.

The best of success to you.
