PT 9 Won't Initialize

Weird: (maybe not so weird

I am testing a Win7 machine with PT9, and after going through and implementing some of the recommended tweaks, PT9 won't start up.

Prior to implementing the Digi Support supplied tweaks, PT would initialize, (show the little blue rotating circle at my cursor, produce the PT9 logo, and run through all of my plugins - and instantiate)

Now, I get the blue circle at my cursor, but PT9 fails to start. I went back through the recommended tweaks I performed, and all were as they should be. I have not added or removed any software or hardware, I only performed the aforementioned tweaks (I'm already tired of that term in this post

I uninstalled PT, reinstalled is, installed the 002 Rack Driver, and .....nothing.


I was able to start up Reason 4, (as stand alone) and have it utilize the 002 to produce sound, so it is not a hardware issue, or connection detection issue.

Any thoughts or experience with this same kind of issue would be appreciated.

Not all the tweaks are totally necessary, anyway. I look at them as things to try if it doesn't behave right. Note that in the document some of the tweaks are followed by notes describing the kinds of problems they are thought to solve. I don't do those tweaks unless I'm having those problems, or at least some problems. Basically, I'm suggesting undoing tweaks you think you might not need until PT works for ya. After all, you're snowed in so it's not like you can go do something else.

do you ever get to the splash screen? if so hold down the n key to bring up the engine window.

Thanks for your replies gents. I'm not (generally) a Windows user, which made it a bit more difficult, and I had second thoughts about posting because of this reason.

However, the issue stemmed from the msconfig portion of the Avid recommended tweaks. Though all Digi related items were indeed "checked", some of the Windows items were not, and resulted in the failure. Simply checking ALL, and have them all start up at boot solved the issue. When time permits, I'll go through each to see which one (for sure) was the culprit in the failure to initialize.

I feel your pain there. I also had to UN-do some of the tweaks

I had the same problem and it may sound silly but are you running PT9 as "administrator"? Try right clicking on the PT9 icon and choose "Run as Administrator" . It worked for me.

Right, and you can also go through the Properties window of the Pro Tools program file (the exe) (under Advanced Settings? or something) and check a box that tells it to always run as Administrator. Then after another time or two the OS will stop confounding you with silly questions about being sure you want to do that.
