I need more USB ports on my Hapertown Mac Pro. I brought a cheap 7 port one off Ebay but it’s crap it always cuts. Anybody here recommend one that works !!!

I recently bought a Amazon Basics 4 port USB 3 hub that seems to be working well. I'm bus powering it, not using the included power adapter. Only plugging in accessories though, not my interface.

Been using various D-Link hubs over the years and they've been good for me. All powered by a wallwart - don't trust bus powered models. The one on my daw machine is a D-Link 7 port with a couple of them having a fairly large current output on each. I even use one of the ports to charge my cell phone. I don't have my 11 Rack and MOTU MIDI Timepiece AVUSB plugged into it as they go direct into the cheesegrater USB ports.

A thought - if you're going to plug your iLok into one do get a dongle buddy short extension cable.

Mine does bugger all if I pull out the connected equipment and plug them back in. It’s powered by a wall wart socket. Do macs have a setting where the USB goes to sleep ??

Macs have a couple of different sleep possibilities - the whole machine goes to sleep, display goes to sleep, drives can be set to sleep and apps can go to sleep but all of those are user configurable. The first three in System Preferences and the last one is on a per-application basis and configured via the 'get info' menu selection. But the USB ports themselves don't have a separately configurable sleep option (that would be taken care of by the whole computer sleeping).

Default USB hub recommendations

Ahhh memories.

I remember when I got my 3.1 Harpertown........I remember letting that thing sleep and waking it “and going right to work”

Hiccup free!!

It was months before I actually had to restart my Mac just for an actual gremlin.

So it must just be the rubbish USB hub then causing the issue. I’ll try a different one

Sounds good. Did you get a wallwart powered one or bus powered?
