Default 5.1 to Stereo, Stereo to 5.1 and your Mix Templates in Pro Tools

Hey everyone,

I am curious how you handle your Pro Tools sessions in terms of projects that require (or even may require) multiple playback formats. i.e, Stereo and 5.1 versions. Do you work off two separate mix templates for each, or have you set up a single template that effectively allows you to do either depending on the request.

I am working on a project (dialogue edit, sound design & mix) at the moment where it is up in the air if it will end up as a full 5.1 surround mix, perhaps just an LCRS mix for screening purposes, or stereo. In all likelihood, it is going to end up in 5.1 and stereo...

Any advice on how you would handle such a project? It seems easier, at least from a sound design perspective to start with 5.1 and work it down if needed... rather than heading from stereo up to 5.1. Would anyone have a mix template they might like to share?

Default Re: 5.1 to Stereo, Stereo to 5.1 and your Mix Templates in Pro Tools

Start with widest format (7.1, 5.1, etc.) and downmix from there. Making a template is easy. Create your 5.1 busses and any sub busses you may need for Dialog, Music, FX, etc. Create downmix stereo busses and auxes for the same using the built in downmix plugin. Assuming you only need an LoRo. If you need an LtRt then you’ll need an encoder plugin (Neyrinck)

Create your source tracks and route accordingly.
