Default XMON - Just Not Happy With It

I’m running a 24 channel D command, and I’m curious if any of you have stopped using your XMON for monitoring and gone with an alternative unit.

If I did replace it with something else, it would be in the sub $1000 range.

I have good monitors, Adam Audio A77X’s, There just seems to be an unpleasant harshness coming from them regardless which source I choose from the D-command. It’s not a significant harshness, but just doesn’t seem right.

When I tried to calibrate the various inputs going into the XMON, it doesn’t seem to be registering any difference on the meters on the D-command. My ProTools send to the XMON is my Omni, levels for it seem balance between left and right. The others three, on the meters show the left side hotter than the right.

Input one is audio coming from my computer. Input 2 is from my Kemper, input three is from a Bluetooth Receiver.

So after all of this, I guess I’m asking two different questions here.

One if there something I’m doing wrong with calibrating my XMON? I read the manual 10 times, and I seem to be doing it right compared to the manual.

Second question, there seem to of been a lot of advancement in sub $1000 monitor controllers, since the XMON came out, even if I weren’t having the issues mentioned above, would any of you recommend me changing to one of those? Some examples below.

I have a D-Control, but I guess I'm asking whats not to like about the XMON? Its sole purpose is to give you simple monitoring of audio. Its not meant to be a mixer or amp or to allow for extra bangs and whistles or even special routing (unless you are using the software); its just a monitor. Further it gives you full control of it from the control surface. I don't know of any other solutions that actually connect to the D-Control/D-Command, that use the controls on the control surface, yet do more than what the buttons on the control surface allow. What exactly are you wanting? Personally it sounds to me like you may be outgrowing your D-command and it may be time to move to a used D-Control or newer board.
