Win-10 - Leaves a lot to be desired!
For all the hype about how wonderful Win-10 would be, and after waiting nearly a year to make the leap, and checking and re-checking here with things to think about in making the upgrade from Win-7, about 2 weeks ago, I made the jump. So far, its been frustrating and a headache on several fronts.
First off, Win-10 itself has some quirks that just don't make sense. Among them, it doesn't ever want to just power down. I click to turn off the computer, it takes forever, and even if it shuts down, I'll come back a few hours later, and its ON...all by itself. Or, it just sits in hibernation mode, even though I've turned that option off. Apparently, many have had the same experience. But more importantly is what its done to audio. Before upgrading, I had few if any issues with audio with my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 interface. Sound was clean, noise free, and all worked well. Since the upgrade, I get pops and clicks, and had to spend hours on the phone with Focusrite to solve all kinds of issues with the Mixcontrol and USB drivers. And even after all that, I still get some pops and clicks on audio playback both in Pro Tools and anything else. Its nuts! Also, Win-10 takes forever to boot up, even though I've thinned out a lot of the auto load stuff. And forever to shut down...if it does shut down.! Its crazy! Not asking for any advice...just needed to rant! [/rant]

Re: Win-10 - Leaves a lot to be desired!
I can tell you the path with windows is not as clean as with the mac side.
There are so many systems and configurations that unless you are a windows builder i would not expect a "run of the mill" windows box to just work. I have been building systems back when an 8088 was a upgrade path and it takes someone who can navigate the hardware and drivers that can cause you bad performance. I have a native 12.7.1 HD rig running a 4k and a 1080p 2nd monitor. I also run a faderport 8 and if i run my usb MOTU midi interface at the sametime, my PT will not boot correctly. But the same hardware with the MOTU midi on while running Cubase 9 works fine. I would get yourself a windows guru and let him or her tweak your system. Thanks Fvf |

Re: Win-10 - Leaves a lot to be desired!
Something's very wrong. I would reinstall and run bog standard and completely up to date with no tweaks of any kind. (I.E. the same way people run Macs.) Tweaks seem to make no difference or even cause problems unlike the world of XP.

Win-10 - Leaves a lot to be desired!
My Win10 Install is wonderful and I love it....
And know what the best part is? It will be compatible with PT14......(can't say that about a Mac.....) Do people even still run PT on Macs?

Re: Win-10 - Leaves a lot to be desired!
Hmm... I have not had any of the problems with Windows 10.
Did you do an upgrade or a clean install? If you did the upgrade, (I realize you are not asking for advice), I would try a clean install. My preference for a clean install is the old school method, not just refreshing Windows. That means format the HDD, and then install Windows 10 from a DVD or USB stick ISO. It is a lot more work for sure, re-installing everything does take days when you have hundreds of plugins and applications, but it's worth the time IMO.

Re: Win-10 - Leaves a lot to be desired!
I keep trying Win10. I keep wanting to like it. I keep going back to Win7
As for Faderport8 and Motu not working well together, I would ask Presonus about this as I have the original faderport and a Motu Fastlane USB 2x2 working happily together

Re: Win-10 - Leaves a lot to be desired!
Just to be clear, I do know that not all of the issues I'm finding are Pro Tools problems. In fact, for the most PT itself seems to be okay running in Win-10, although I have had a couple issues with sessions with video. Not sure why, but re-booting fixed it.
Its all the other little issues that keep cropping up that weren't there before the upgrade. What we need is an audio production friendly version of Win-10...one that's already optimized for audio production upon installation. Remind me to call Bill Gates...
