Opinions do vary. I take stems with me when I go to another room for mastering. It is kind of easy remix should there be a need for -say- change bass or lead vocal levels

They may on the uses of Stems, but not on the definition of the term, which is what this thread is about.

I thought Drew would appreciate the irony is in this;
Mixed music for Avid to be used for Mr. Hernandez’s presentation at NAB later this week,
so when they drop boxed me the files to mix
they were labeled as…you guessed it… Stems!

I'm used to the indie kids from Silverlake labeling trax as such,
(along with the ubiquitous bip’s nowadays).
I thought about linking to this thread when I uploaded my Masters back up to dropbox
but felt that would be a little too snarky…

Stems are stems, whatever marinade you use to cook them...

Maybe somebody should mention for the uninitiated that stems by definition will produce the intended balance when lined up flat with the very same gain setting.

Appropriate to this thread. The beginning of video one has a good, illustrated definition of a stem.

I've never worked in a chain so never used stems. I just use sub mixes, basically stems but not printed. Don't see the point in stems if your working alone. I don't see the point in them if your in a chain if the next guy is using Pro Tools. Just commit any plugins and send them the session
