Default 003 rack not getting detected

Hey,
Would really appreciate help with this, will be starting the 201 course tomorrow so I'm trying to figure this out ASAP.

Basically, have had my 003 rack about 18 months, no problems with it in the past. Use it on my Vista Ultimate (Dell) and an older Macbook. The primary computer is the Vista one though. For some reason, earlier today when I started it up, it just wouldn't get detected by my Vista. I tried a different firewire cable, and then my Macbook and to no avail. Also tried switching between the two ports on the 003 itself.

If it makes any difference, I only upgraded to Pro Tools 8 a fortnight ago but it had worked in the meantime. The only thing I have done, that was out of the ordinary was switch from using the firewire port on the front of my Dell to the firewire on the back of the Dell. This was definitely done when the 003 was off along with the computer. I'm aware it can cause problems but I wouldn't have thought to this degree.

Lastly, I've tried putting the 003 rack into the firmware "reset" mode... still nothing. The "link" light remains lit when its connected to anything though.

I'm hoping thats enough detail and its not specific to the computer or operating system... I'm a bit worried and hoping I haven't somehow fried (both?!) firewire ports on the 003!

Help?

*EDIT*
When I say the "link" light remains lit, I mean the one at the back beside the firewire ports. Not the "1394" on the front. Any suggestions and I'd be very grateful....

Have you tried reinstalling PT8 on either your MacBook or Dell befor you connect the 003 ?
If not, I would try disconnecting the 003 and install PT8.

During the installation you should be asked to connect the 003.

Okay.. tried that on my Vista. When asked to turn the hardware on I did so. Then it went through the whole installing devices no problem. Installed and all but at no point did the "1394" on the front light up.

Still doesn't work, but would I be right to say it wouldn't have installed if it wasn't detecting the 003 at all?

Yeah, I've been in contact with one and will be taking it in to get looked at/repaired on Monday.

I'm pretty sure I've eliminated any possibility thats its a software issue so I'm thinking the firewire ports are just dead. I'll post here when I'm told exactly whats wrong with it in case anyone else has the same problem.

Since it is at the store this is a little late, but it is important to have an external firewire drive, and there is a recommended way to connect them, with the drive between the computer and the 003.

Do you have it connected correctly? Is your firewire harddrive working OK? Is it powered up? If it isn't then you are not getting firewire communication to the 003. An obvious test is whether or not you see the outboard harddrive as a drive on your computer.

I have had simliar problems with the digi002, I dont think its the box itself as it functions fine, more so the firewire PCI card in the Pc, when I swap this its fine. I have a few spare PCI cards if you want, I'm in Ireland though. Maybe you could get one on ebay cheap.

Hot-swapping firewire devices is a sure-fire (pun intended) way to fry the firewire controller chip.....
