You have several issues that need to be dealt with:
You're going to have to upgrade OSX to Mountain Lion; at least OSX 10.8.3 but preferably the latest of OSX 10.8.5

More ram - 4 gig is barely enough to get things working.

A second hard drive for PT to record to. Second drive must not be a green drive and never set to sleep. For that matter your whole system must not be allowed to sleep as that can and will cause problems with PT. You don't say what exact Mac you have so port connection depends on that. Thunderbolt if you have such a port; next would be either FW800 or USB3 (USB 2 isn't fast enough).

Properly optimize your computer. That means turning off the aforementioned sleep modes for drives and system. Turning off Spotlight indexing. Turning off wireless networking. A Google search or a search will turn up other things to be done.

Plugins are a separate download from the main program.

Pro Tools 11 is different than previous versions. No more digidesign folder (or avid folder for that matter), just the application package in your applications folder. As mentioned above you have to download and install the instruments separately.

I've read on this forum that a few people run ProTools 11 on 10.7.5 with no issues, I have a sound editor friend who is running it on Lion as well and so far so good...But I was already on Mavericks when I installed it so I can't really comment.

And yes you definitely need more ram...

Not quite right. Although the PT program no longer resides in a subfolder but directly in your Applications folder there are still Digidesign (if you have PT10) and Avid folders (for PT11) that contain the plugins.

Yes but these folders are just aliases. The actual plugin folder is in /Library/Application Support/Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins. ProTools 11 doesn't use the avid folder where PT10 resides (I think even PT10 used the renamed "avid" folder btw). On one of my Mac Pros I have only PT11 and there's no avid folder at all. I have it on my other Mac only because PT10 was previously installed (and still is since the uninstaller doesn't seem to work with Mavericks, so I leave it there until I can get rid of it)

Once again you are wrong. The folders I was referring to ARE the ones in the Library folder. And therein IS an Avid folder. I was never referring to the Applications folder for the Digidesign and Avid folders. PT10 uses the Digidesign folder in the Library folder.

I misunderstood. I thought you were indeed referring to the avid folder in Applications. My bad...

I doubt that, especially for large sessions or using lots of sampler vi's. Too slow.
