Re: "A game changer"
Of course I realize it's pointless to complain about anything. As others rightly say, "If you don't like it, go use something else! No one's holding a gun to your head to use Pro Tools!". It's just that, ESPECIALLY after the money I've invested in it, I'd much rather stay, and just have it FINALLY measure up to everything else.

Re: "A game changer"
Well ... I guess it depends on what stuff you look at and how much importance you attach to it and on which end of the food chain you stand.
Most people I deal with couldn't care less for an offline bounce or a graphical gadget that would allow them to see a waveform while you drag a region around in the timeline. They do care about sample accurately locking up a bunch of Pro Tools satellites and video satellites whilst not loosing any performance or speed as opposed to working on a single system. They care about the speed their dedicated controllers will allow them to bank through channels or switch from one system to the other. They care about having an automation system that will virtually allow them to do what their creative mind can think off They care about elastic audio manipulation handles that will allow them to forensically go in and edit things we did not deem possible 5 years ago and so on and so on. One of the problems I see with people appreciating the feature set in Pro Tools is that 90 % of all Pro Tools users doesn't use 10 % of it's capabilities. I've said this before and I'll say it again : Yes, you often have to wait a long time before a feature finally makes it into Pro Tools but if and when it does, it more often then not surpasses anything out there by not only it's ease of use, but nearly always by it's capabilities as well. For some people a meal is only good when the plate is fully covered with the sauce dripping off the edges. Me, I prefer the fine belgian cuisine with 6 courses well served in tiny portions but with high quality ingredients and a very nice bottle of fine whine.

Personally, I cherish the time it takes to print VI's. That's when I sit back with a cup of coffee and just listen to what I've done, instead of fiddling with knobs and faders. And because I've had to do it like that for many years, it would take me forever to trust offline bouncing. I am a PT fanboy for sure, but there are things I really hate with it. RTAS and VI's being the most dominant ones. All in all, I love working in PT, and I'm still on 7.4.2. PT software and the ICON console combined is such a lovely way to work. I'm with you! Onward and upward, but not whatever the cost!

ProTools is where it is because no other DAW touches its ease of use. Cubase, Logic, Sonar, DP, Reaper... all make my eyes glaze over. If someone can create a DAW that approaches ProTools work flow advantages, Avid will have something to worry about. |

Re: "A game changer"
And that as much as anything else was probably a consideration when deciding what RTAS was going to be capable of when they were originally coding it.

Re: "A game changer"
I imagine any one person who has worked with a given DAW for many years can say the same about all the other ones. I know that whenever I try to wrap my brain around a different one, my eyes do indeed glaze over...but then I haven't spent years getting to know those particular programs inside and out like I did Pro Tools. Conversely, my old boss, who uses Sony Vegas (which I hadn't even HEARD of when I started at that studio) thought that Pro Tools was clumsy/complicated/ etc, and he was a speed whiz on Vegas. I of course, was the opposite.
