Default DPP post new UK Broadcast Tech Spec

Dear All

The DPP (a collaboration between BBC ITV CH4 Ch5 bSKYb S4C BTSport etc) has published new spec.

R128 is officially adopted (that's -23LUFS for you folks over the pond)

Link to tech spec and individual channel peccadilloes

I would recommend a good read (I have just read Ch4's spec) - it would seem that divergence is the preferred norm now (stands back and watches sparks fly….sorry Alan!)

enjoy the down mix….

Dialog with front divergence, stupid Englishmen!
Why mess with the standard further, making your own little adaptions!?

Stereo downmixes with mono dialog that is sent to all front speakers will be a bitch to deal with. Can you spell OVER?

Great that they go with R128, to bad that they try to mess with it in a very British way...
Fortunately I am in the mode three cat, so I will get away not doing it when delivering material to be viewed in UK.

1) I think you mean Dialogue
2) EBU R.128 doesn't specify anything about divergence, so I'm not sure what is being adapted.

Where does it talk about divergence? Does it say how much divergence is wanted? Does it say how much is too much?

The DPP spec sheet says:

3.5.1 Dialogue in a surround mix
There are three options for the placing of dialogue in a surround mix:
Mode 1 All dialogue should be present in each of the three front channels - but this does not
mean that the dialogue has to be at equal level in each of the front channels. Mode 1 is
generally more suited to the home listening environment.
Mode 2 In-vision dialogue across the three front channels and out of vision dialogue in the centre
channel only.
Mode 3 All dialogue in the centre channel only. Mode 3 is similar to cinema mixing and as such
may be the least suited to the home listening environment.
For details of the mode required for each programme type see the broadcaster section at the beginning
of this document

EBU R.128 on the other hand doesn't mention divergence at all.

Well,

dialogue divergence opinions apart, at least the UK major broadcasters got an agreement on a unified delivery spec, which in my opinion, makes it all much clear for the professionals that work in the UK TV business.

Maybe the rest of Europe could learn someting here...

First off it's Dialog:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dialog?s=t

Someone needs to have a DIALOG with the DPP regarding
having DIALOG across all 3 speakers.
Obviously someone who is not a DIALOG Mixer came up with this not
so fine spec
