Default os X & windows 2000 dilemma

Hello,

I am considering moving from my dedicated 8-track machine to a computer based recording system. I have heard good things about the Digi 001 system and was considering purchasing it. However, then I browsed this user conference area. Here I found the problem: my two machines (mac and dual processor pc) both run non-supported operating systems; mac os X beta (soon to be mac os X) and windows 2000 professional. This concerns me greatly. Do I have to downgrade my machines to essentially obsolete OS'es to host the Digi 001? If and when Digidesign offers these options will I then have to pay to upgrade? Is Digidesign primarily a Macintosh shop? If so, is this the reason for their weakness in regards to the PC? (In one of the conference threads by a Digidesign employee, it is indicated that no plans were in place for Windows 2000 support). So ... someone give me reason to confidant about my purchase. No Mac vs. PC arguments for I am very well versed in both worlds. I am seeing obvious weaknesses (oversights) in this company and I concerned about making an investment in them. Thanks ...

On either machine, you should be able to do a dual boot. On the mac, you probably have 9.x installed anyway (you need it to run anything in classic mode), so you can just select it in the "system disk" control panel and reboot.

Down the road, I assume digi will support W2k and OSX, which will happen first, who knows? (to say that either MacOS 9.1 or WinME is "obsolete" at this point is rather silly - if you don't get the 001, what gear do you plan to buy that already has both W2k and OSX support?)

Thanks for the reply Mike.

Yes, I am quite aware of dual booting. However, in the case of the PC (where I am actually planning on running the Digi 001) with Win98/ME I lose the benefit of my Dual Processor System and the robustness of NTFS versus FAT. And yes, I will reiterate the word obsolete in terms of MacOS and Win9x - from an operating system standpoint they are. And ... why else do think Apple and Microsoft are scrambling to get away from them?

But I do think you hit the nail on the head when you said "who knows?" That is exactly my point. My stressed concern is that Digidesign is not saying "anything" about the future.

Thanks again ...

We are currently working hard on support for both Win2k and OSX. Believe me, these are both very big priorities for us.

Mac OS X is a Unix operating system, swollen with Maya and vectorial graphics and true multiprocessor computing.

I think there is no comparable OS in the planet!
Apple computers have a very better architecture than wintel and have a better clock to performance (2:1 respect to wintel)
So when we put a Mac and Mac OS X together only a SG or supercomputer can compete.
In conclusion i would recommend a Mac with Mac OSX

Um, I think he said he wasn't interested in Mac vs. PC arguments.
