Knowing what he wants, with some time, good ear and basic synth programming skills the OP could get pretty close to what he wants with the stock VIs, there are also several free synths that he can add to his collection: uhe podolski, zebralette, triple cheese, NI reaktor player, IK syntronik...

Someone said the OP needs to use his ears and create my own sound. That's cute. I am a lazy guitar player looking to put some backing tracks together- I have Expand2 and Analog factory ( whatever it's called) and a couple of other programs- the issue is there are SO many options is silly.

I will check out the Korg product someone mentioned. And Hybrid- I have no issue with buying the sound. Just thought there's so much inside the PT bundle already, it'd be hard to NOT find something close- but so far it is hard!!LOL !

If you have presets in the Expand package that you like, please feel free to suggest. I just don't know diddly about envelope filters, saw tooth waves, etc.

Thanks!

Then why go through all the trouble!? go and buy premade backing tracks, they cost $1 each. Google is full of suggestions

+1 for Native Instruments Reaktor player its a good freebie for what you are looking into and can be expanded to full pay Reaktor later. For experimenting now why not try to use one of the instrument presets in the stock plugs and mangle them with the various delay, modulation and harmonic plugs that are stock. Flange, phase shift, mod delay, distortion , go crazy

It can be done, with a little patience and spending time learning to program your own sounds with Xpand and Vacuum. Also, as has been mentioned, creating your own samples with Structure Free.

I have found that to really get those fat, gritty 80's analog sounds, you need to layer up, which is easy enough to do with Xpand, since you can stack up to 4 sounds in one instance of it...and who says you can only have ONE instance of any of them to create 1 nice fat sound? I've created some nice fat sounds using 3-4 instances of the same VI playing the same patch with some slight alterations between them, such as detuning 1 copy up a few cents, and copy 2 down a few (not the exact same amount), and then panning right and left to fill it out. That alone can fatten things up to get those kinds of sounds your looking for...such as that nice (and famous) synth riff that starts Journey's "Separate Ways". With Vacuum, its monophonic, but, it can create some nice fat sounds, especially when layered up. Also, you can make Vacuum polyphonic...the trick is to create a sound in Vacuum. Then create several note samples of it in separate clips. Then you can import those clips to create one sound in Structure...and voila, your monophonic vacuum sound is now polyphonic!

The point is, be creative with what you have, and you CAN create those kinds of sounds. Good luck!
