Default Pro Tools HD video performance tests

Dear All

I have published part one of my video tests on Pro-tools-Expert

first in a series……

A big thank you to Richard Fairbanks at www.PharoahAudio.com for the SYNCHECK3 and to Mike Woods of Dirty Dog Audio (Uk distributor) without whom I couldn't have done this.

Thanks also to Bruce Paine (DUC Mod) for the updated link to PT 11 video codecs http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...r-Pro-Tools-11

Thanks so much for this Mike. Best quote is "Desktop video is like a fish on a bike".

Thanks Mike.

Are you able to check/confirm, in PT 11, using a BM Decklink pci-e card (or any output?) without video ref, the offset can be set in quarter frames, but are rounded to whole frames. I know this is the case when using video ref, but rounding suddenly occurs on my setup without video ref. PT 10 (dual install, same hardware) is working as intended.

Also in PT 11, 24fps video is more stable compared to 25fps. In PT 10, video would have a random delay using a BM card as you concluded in your PT 10 SD video test. Sometimes audio is ahead, sometimes video is ahead. All within about +/- 2 qrt frames.
I have tested PT 11, it seems 24fps video is now fixed, but 25fps video still wanders around each stop/start (steady when playing though). Combined with the rounding of frame offset, it's pretty hard to get 25fps video sync...

(using PT10.3.9 HDX, PT11.1.3 HDX, OSX 10.8.5, Decklink driver 10.1.1, Decklink Extreme & Mini Monitor)

I wonder how the little AJA T-tap and Blackmagic mini devices behaving under the same circumstances. If they are really that much better than desktop video, than I surely buy one of those if they perform well.
A simple comparison test would do. Anyone has experience with these tiny thunderbolt devices? Are they provide stability into our video world?

I've been a big fan of Blackmagic hardware for a long time, but now I need to buy something small with Thunderbolt for my laptop. Which is better, the BM (with the new drivers) or the AJA?

I'm in the very same boat. Aja mini or Blackmagic mini?
