The SYNC I/O can only generate or chase SMPTE. It cannot chase and generate SMPTE simultaneously.

although it will not generate and chase at the same time it does reshape any timecode that is present at the input. ( loop through ) while reading TC

For best results with a tape machine both PT and the Machine MUST be on the same clock reference. i.e. vid-ref or PT using TC as the ref. ( tc/tc )
depending on the tape machine otherwise you will never get 2 passes the same

I've never really found a definitive answer to this, but when I sync my PTHD to a DA-98 I've been told to reference my tape machine to video reference and PTs to the DA-98s wordclock. What do you think for a digital transfer? My initial reaction was just to lock both to the same video reference.

It looks like the only way to sync Protools to the multi track 2" and use the external clock on my converters will be to print smpte on a Protools track and use Ptools as the master.

Kinda a wast of a Ptool track ......

I would really like to use the studer as the master as i will be starting projects on tape first, and syncing to Ptools later.

Thanks for the replies,

steve

how is that going to work?
unless your " multitrack ? " can chase TC
I've never seen a analog machine that will do this without a synchronizer

even if you have a synchronizer and you do print a tc track as an audio file
using pt as the master the the "multitrack ? " it will not locate without a pulse of TC to kick it back.

In the past before I got a microlynx I would send the TC off the tape to an audio Distribution Amplifier. one output would go to my USD at the time and the other would go to the Console. My console took word clock so I could send clock to it from my aardsync and everything worked okay. Occasionally I would find a voulume fade a little out of time. But for the most part things worked well at least for me. I know this is not the best way for it to be done but it did work.
