I don't know why this is, but I would guess it's about not being able to see the difference of the two on a single network. If it was possible to ID different computers playing back from AVB it would mean we would have to address a single one in the patchbay. If you are looking for a solution to have a redundant setup for playing back tracks, there are automatic switching systems out there. It's the old fashion way, though. Radial have a good product that will make such a backup system that would be very seamless.

It is possible to send a protools (or any other) payback device to the input channels instead of a stagebox.
You need the riedel AVB controller software and connect streams in a different way.
That saying this is not a supported or by any means stable tested setup!
But in the studio we connected one protools system via port B on the surface the regular way and another one through port B (or A its been a while) using a Madiface protools rig and converting to AVB with the pivitec device.
Worked fine :)
