Default Hot recordings????

I recorded a bass kick loop that was sampled from a 909 into a mpc in PT. When I was listening to this loop on the AUX channel, I really liked how the sound was effected when I pushed it into the red. I recorded it with out clipping the levels because I was afraid that I could possibly cause damage to my monitors or converters or whatever. Is clipping a recording bad for equipment either during recording or playback?
